New book examines the biological determinants of capitalism, socialism and income inequality

Charles L. Ladner announces the publication of ‘Inequality and Evolution’

NEWTOWN SQUARE, Pa., Jan. 12, 2021 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Why has capitalism proven to be such an extraordinary success and socialism such a miserable failure? In his latest book, “Inequality and Evolution” (published by Xlibris), financial executive and published author Charles L. Ladner offers a unique analysis of the problem of inequality and a solution to this growing economic dilemma.

Through the lens of evolutionary biology, the author examines both socialism and capitalism to determine their coherence with the primary motivation of natural selection, which is the drive for survival and reproduction, otherwise known as selfishness. He finds that, to the extent that an economic system is consistent with this primitive compulsion, it is likely to be successful; but if an economic system attempts to suppress the genetic thrust of selfishness, it will likely fail. It is for this reason that socialism, on a state level always fails, while capitalism always succeeds. The historical record supports this finding.

Ladner, however, points out that capitalism has, within it the seeds, its own self-destruction. In this book, he analyzes the growth of inequality in the United States from 1979 to the present day, and proposes a radical solution of income redistribution within the framework of a capitalist system.

“The book presents a reasoned analysis of economic behavior centered on evolutionary principals, and from this derives a solution to the question of income inequality that is consistent with the capitalist model and its genetic foundation,” the author states. “The overarching concept of this book is that biological determinism will produce predictable economic outcomes that, within limits, can be modified for the betterment of humankind.”

When asked what he wants readers to take away from the book, Ladner hopes that is readers will come to appreciate: (A.) That state socialism is a failed concept and that, for biological reasons, it can never, and has never, succeeded. (B.) That since 1979, U.S. government tax and regulatory policy has been heavily biased in favor of the rich at the expense of the middle class. (C.) That this economic injustice must be rectified. (D.) That solutions can be found within the framework of capitalism.

New novel follows a midget, genius composer as he attempts to solve crimes transpiring in a group home for the mentally ill

Kate Valery announces the publication of ‘Midget or Symphony of the Ocean’

WHITE ROCK, British Columbia, Jan. 12, 2021 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Love and purity clash against malice and dirt in Kate Valery’s latest literary offering titled “Midget or Symphony of the Ocean” (published by Trafford Publishing)

In this novel, Jim Bogat — a midget and a genius composer — accidentally finds himself in a group home for mentally ill people. Being the only one person in his right mind in the house, he starts to notice strange things which that are happening around. He then decides to start his own investigation of those crimes, however Mona Lainer, the owner of the group home and a sexually obsessed, double-faced malicious criminal, is hell-bent on preventing Jim from discovering her dangerous secrets. She schemes a plot to steal page-by-page Jim’s “Symphony of the Ocean” to sham her daughter as genius composer. Can Jim, with the help of a young Ukrainian immigrant named Lada, uncover Mona’s crimes and turn his dream of performing his symphony into reality?

Written with an intensive adventurous plot, “Midget or Symphony of the Ocean” is a page-turning novel that seeks to break the stigma towards mentally ill and handicapped people in today’s society. It also presents the ever-living values and ideas of good and evil, talent and mediocrity, love and hatred, purity and foul, honesty and lies, willpower and weakness, hypocrisy and truth, punishment and crime, tragedy and sacrifices.

“I wanted to stress this idea — if someone is handicapped, it doesn’t mean that he is useless for society, sometimes it is the opposite. He is extremely special genius and could do much more than other so called ‘normal’ people,” Valery states. “I also want them to gain more knowledge about immigrants and their value for modern society (as well as) believe that true love exists.”

Kindred Group unaudited trading update for the fourth quarter 2020

PR Newswire

LONDON, Jan. 12, 2021 /PRNewswire/ —

  • The Group’s strong business momentum continued throughout the fourth quarter of 2020, with active customers increasing by 11 per cent compared to the same period last year, and Gross winnings revenue reaching all-time high levels of approximately GBP 365 million.
  • Strong revenue growth combined with substantial operational leverage and continued focus on cost efficiency drove a significant annual increase in underlying EBITDA to approximately GBP 115 million.

Kindred has delivered its strongest quarter ever with Gross winnings revenue at an all-time high of approximately GBP 365 million (Q4 2019: GBP 236.2 million), representing annual growth of 55 per cent. This has been achieved through continued strong activity across its markets and products, and record active customer numbers of 1.78 million, an increase of 11 per cent compared to the same quarter last year. Gross winnings revenue growth was also supported by a slightly higher than normal sports betting margin, which was approximately 10 per cent (after free bets) for the quarter, compared to the long-term average margin of around 8.5 per cent.

Underlying EBITDA for the fourth quarter of 2020 is estimated to be approximately GBP 115 million (Q4 2019: GBP 30.7 million) which is significantly higher than the current consensus. The main contributing factors for this increase are the strong revenue growth, combined with Kindred’s continued focus on operational efficiency and costs.

The level of marketing investment has gradually increased during the second half of the year and during the fourth quarter the total marketing spend was around 13 per cent higher than in the fourth quarter of 2019. Although marketing spend increased between the third and fourth quarters of 2020, the significant increase in revenue and improved marketing efficiencies have meant that marketing spend was approximately 21 per cent of Gross winnings revenue for the quarter. Despite a drop in marketing spend during the pandemic, Kindred’s share of voice has increased throughout 2020.

The year end report for 2020 will be published on 10 February 2021. The results presentation and Q&A session will be available through webcast as usual.

Box, Inc. Announces Pricing of Offering of $315 Million of Convertible Senior Notes

Box, Inc. Announces Pricing of Offering of $315 Million of Convertible Senior Notes

REDWOOD CITY, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–
Box, Inc. (NYSE: BOX), a leader in cloud content management, today announced the pricing of $315 million aggregate principal amount of 0% convertible senior notes due 2026 (the “notes”) in a private placement to qualified institutional buyers pursuant to Rule 144A under the Securities Act of 1933, as amended (the “Securities Act”). Box also granted the initial purchasers of the notes an option to purchase up to an additional $30 million aggregate principal amount of the notes. The sale of the notes is expected to close on January 14, 2021, subject to customary closing conditions.

The notes will be general senior, unsecured obligations of Box, will not bear regular interest, and the principal amount of the notes will not accrete. The notes will mature on January 15, 2026, unless earlier converted, repurchased or redeemed. The initial conversion rate will be 38.7665 shares of Box’s Class A common stock (“common stock”) per $1,000 principal amount of notes (equivalent to an initial conversion price of approximately $25.80 per share of common stock). The initial conversion price of the notes represents a premium of approximately 45% over the last reported sale price of Box’s common stock on The New York Stock Exchange on January 11, 2021. The notes will be convertible into cash, shares of Box’s common stock or a combination of cash and shares of Box’s common stock, at Box’s election.

Box may redeem the notes, at its option, on or after January 20, 2024, if the last reported sale price of Box’s common stock has been at least 130% of the conversion price then in effect for at least 20 trading days (whether or not consecutive) during any 30 consecutive trading day period (including the last trading day of such period) ending on and including the trading day immediately preceding the date on which Box provides notice of redemption at a redemption price equal to 100% of the principal amount of the notes to be redeemed, plus accrued and unpaid special interest to, but excluding, the redemption date.

If a “fundamental change” (as defined in the indenture governing the notes) occurs at any time prior to the maturity date, holders of the notes may require Box to repurchase for cash all or any portion of their notes at a repurchase price equal to 100% of the principal amount of the notes to be repurchased, plus any accrued and unpaid special interest. In addition, following certain corporate events or if Box issues a notice of redemption, Box will, under certain circumstances, increase the conversion rate for holders who convert their notes in connection with such corporate event or during a redemption period.

Box estimates that the net proceeds from the offering will be approximately $306.3 million (or $335.6 million if the initial purchasers exercise their option to purchase additional notes in full), after deducting the initial purchasers’ discounts and estimated offering expenses payable by Box. Box intends to use a portion of the net proceeds to pay the cost of the capped call transactions described below and the remainder of the net proceeds for working capital and other general corporate purposes, such as repayment of debt and potential acquisitions. While Box has not designated any specific uses and has no current agreements with respect to any material acquisition, Box is examining potential acquisitions. It is possible that Box may not be able to complete such acquisitions on favorable terms or complete them at all. Box does not anticipate that any of these potential acquisitions would be “significant” for purposes of Rule 3-05 of Article II of Regulation S-X.

In connection with the pricing of the notes, Box entered into capped call transactions with the initial purchasers and/or their respective affiliates and certain other financial institutions (the “option counterparties”). The capped call transactions are expected generally to reduce potential dilution to Box’s common stock upon any conversion of notes, with such reduction subject to a cap initially equal to $35.58 (which represents a premium of 100% over the last reported sale price of Box’s common stock on The New York Stock Exchange on January 11, 2021), and is subject to certain adjustments under the terms of the capped call transactions. If the initial purchasers exercise their option to purchase additional notes, Box expects to enter into additional capped call transactions with the option counterparties.

Box expects that, in connection with establishing their initial hedges of the capped call transactions, the option counterparties or their respective affiliates may enter into various derivative transactions with respect to Box’s common stock and/or purchase shares of Box’s common stock concurrently with or shortly after the pricing of the notes. This activity could increase (or reduce the size of any decrease in) the market price of Box’s common stock or the notes at that time.

In addition, Box expects that the option counterparties or their respective affiliates may modify their hedge positions by entering into or unwinding various derivatives with respect to Box’s common stock and/or purchasing or selling Box’s common stock or other securities of Box in secondary market transactions following the pricing of the notes and prior to the maturity of the notes (and are likely to do so on each exercise date for the capped call transactions). This activity could also cause or prevent an increase or a decrease in the market price of Box’s common stock or the notes, and to the extent the activity occurs during any observation period related to a conversion of notes, this could affect the value of the consideration that a noteholder will receive upon conversion of its notes.

Neither the notes, nor any shares of Box’s common stock potentially issuable upon conversion of the notes, have been, nor will be, registered under the Securities Act or any state securities laws and, unless so registered, may not be offered or sold in the United States absent registration or an applicable exemption from, or in a transaction not subject to, the registration requirements of the Securities Act and other applicable securities laws.

This press release is neither an offer to sell nor a solicitation of an offer to buy any securities, nor shall it constitute an offer, solicitation or sale of the securities in any jurisdiction in which such offer, solicitation or sale would be unlawful prior to the registration or qualification under the securities laws of any such jurisdiction.

‘Nights of the Moonless Sky’ by N. S. Vishwanath offers readers a gripping ride across an exotic South Indian setting

MYSORE, India, Jan. 12, 2021 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — In “Nights of the Moonless Sky: A Tale from the Vijayanagara Empire” (published by Archway Publishing), a historical thriller of intrigue and self-discovery by N. S. Vishwanath, the widow of a 16th century South Indian patriarch must take control of her destiny in order to survive in an uncertain world.

The Vijayanagara Empire is in the throes of a succession struggle. Patriarch Rajanna has died. Aadarshini, his 22-year-old widow and mother of the heir to the majestic estate of Madhuvana, is slated to perform an ancient ritual in which a widow is cremated alive. Azam Khan is Rajanna’s trusted bodyguard, left rudderless after the death of his master. Prabhakara Swami is the enigmatic temple priest who holds the strings that control the fates of others. The destinies of three conflicted characters intersect as each prepares to get what is coming to them.

“In Aadarshini, we have a kick-ass protagonist, with a quest that is reminiscent of the great heroes of historical fiction,” Vishwanath says, adding that “The external genre is ‘woman-in-jeopardy thriller.’ The internal genre is ‘worldview maturation’ in which the protagonist matures from naiveté to worldliness in order to obtain her object of desire.”

‘The New Eugenics’ examines the implications of various biotechnologies for humankind

‘The New Eugenics’ examines the implications of various biotechnologies for humankind

BLOOMSBURG, Penn., Jan. 12, 2021 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Conrad B. Quintyn, Ph.D., explores how scientists seeking to repair “defects” in humans have ushered in the age of the new eugenics in his new book “The New Eugenics: Modifying Biological Life in the Twenty-First Century” (published by Archway Publishing).

The author argues that increasingly, scientists believe that improving the health, environment, and safety of humankind justifies the risks. The book encompasses many biotechnologies within the definition of the “new” eugenics because these technologies are used to “improve the stock,” when the stock in this case are all humans. In addition to discussing the new genetics in terms of in vitro fertilization and PGD (preimplantation genetic diagnosis) like other researchers, Quintyn talks about other biotechnologies as well. Additionally, he includes animals in the new eugenics because the success, advances, techniques, and science of genetic engineering could not have occurred without using animals (and microorganisms, insects, plants) as model organisms.

“Scientific advancement, if not guided responsibly and with public input, can be detrimental to public safety,” Quintyn states, continuing. “And, the public should ponder the dichotomy between scientific advancement and public safety. Or, are these two entities one and the same?”

Discover how a breast cancer diagnosis led one woman to release control and ‘hug’ fear in a healthier way in new memoir

Dana Ch. Levy tackles fears, mental health, anxiety, depression and cancer in ‘Boobless Mammal’

MIAMI, Jan. 12, 2021 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — In her debut memoir “Boobless Mammal: I Wasn’t too Young to Have Breast Cancer” (published by Archway Publishing), Dana Ch. Levy shares her healing journey as a young woman coming to terms with a breast cancer diagnosis.

At 31-years-old, Levy was diagnosed with breast cancer. She broke off her engagement right after being diagnosed, while freezing her eggs, before starting chemotherapy. “Boobless Mammal” chronicles Levy’s healing journey afterward. The author discusses how she was confronted by a terrifying diagnosis and learned to embrace her feelings with honesty. Overall the book is about learning how to release control and let things happen, navigate through life without fear or “hugging” fear in a healthier way.

“For me, cancer served as a catalyst to open windows to feelings that had been kept closed for a long time. This book is the amalgam between what actually happened to me and how I decided to narrate my story,” Levy explains. “What happened to me on 2019 was tough, heavy and overwhelming. However, the way I tell my story is not precisely heavy but quite the opposite. It is light and humorous. Making fun of our personal misfortunes is a big lesson to learn.”

“Boobless Mammal” is available for purchase online at the Archway link above, at Barnes & Noble and on Amazon at: https://www.amazon.com/Boobless-Mammal-Wasnt-Breast-Cancer/dp/1480894974.

An excerpt from “Boobless Mammal” reads:

I tried countless therapies of all flavors and kinds (so many I could create a catalogue). Finally, I found in myself two powerful tools: writing and dancing. … The so-called “confidence” that I had to “work on” emerged… Soon I realized that the ability to heal is not in third parties, stones, or rose baths. It’s in oneself.

Discover the escapades of an independent beach cat through new children’s book

Rhonda Winegar shares some of her cat’s exploits in ‘The Adventures of Vito, the Beach Cat’

AUSTIN, Texas, Jan. 12, 2021 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — An independent beach cat gets himself into trouble when he is mistaken for a stray by tourists and taken to an animal shelter in Rhonda Winegar’s children’s story, “The Adventures of Vito, the Beach Cat” (published by Archway Publishing).

Vito is a cat that lives on the beach in Maine. He lives with his human, Oma. He was rescued by Oma from the animal shelter. He is quite independent and likes to interact with humans especially if they feed him. But, sometimes people think he is a stray and take him. One time, he was picked up and taken to the animal shelter because they thought he was a stray. It was all a misunderstanding because he took his own collar off.

Winegar says that “The Adventures of Vito, the Beach Cat” is a “fun read that parents can use as an educational tool to start a conversation about stranger danger.”

“The Adventures of Vito, the Beach Cat” is available for purchase online at the Archway link above, at Barnes & Noble and on Amazon at: https://www.amazon.com/Adventures-Vito-Beach-Cat/dp/1480899992.

An excerpt from “The Adventures of Vito, the Beach Cat” reads:

I usually play with the little humans just long enough that I can steal some food from them. I love to steal baloney sandwiches. That is my favorite thing to eat. Not that gross DRY cat food that Oma always buys.
