Practical Tips Every Homeowner and Driver Can Use to Beat the Heat and Avoid Costly Damage

LOS ANGELES
, June 26, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — As temperatures rise across the country, intense summer heat waves can cause serious damage to both homes and vehicles — not to mention strain energy systems and budgets. Mercury Insurance is sharing essential guidance to help homeowners and drivers stay safe, reduce costs and protect what matters most during extreme heat.

With decades of experience insuring homes and vehicles in some of the hottest states, Mercury is committed to helping customers stay prepared and comfortable, no matter how high the thermometer climbs.

“Extreme heat can catch people off guard and lead to everything from home system failures to car breakdowns,” said Adam Bakonis, Sr. Product Manager, State at Mercury Insurance. “But with a few simple steps, you can reduce risk, stay cool and avoid expensive repairs.”

Heat Wave Survival Checklist for Homes and Vehicles:

  • Seal windows and doors: Use weather stripping or caulk to keep cool air in and hot air out, cutting down on energy bills.

  • Service your heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system: Get your air conditioner inspected before peak summer hits. Install a smart thermostat to optimize energy usage.

  • Block out the sun: Use blackout curtains, reflective window film or blinds to keep interior spaces cooler.

  • Prevent outdoor fire risk: Clean gutters, remove dry brush near the home and avoid grilling near dry vegetation.

  • Avoid electrical overload: Don’t run multiple high-powered appliances at once, especially during peak afternoon hours.

  • Protect your vehicle: Use sunshades, check coolant levels, inspect your battery and monitor tire pressure frequently.

  • Vent your car: Crack the windows slightly when parked to reduce interior heat buildup and pressure.

  • Stock emergency supplies: Keep bottled water, portable fans, first aid kits, and phone chargers on hand at home and in your car.

  • Check on vulnerable individuals: Make sure pets, children, elderly neighbors and those without air conditioning are staying safe and hydrated.
