Former Mainer Shows How to Sweat, Launching Sauna Suit

Portland, Maine, Nov. 17, 2020 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — As he trained earlier this year for a career in professional football following three years as linebacker at the University of Texas-El Paso, Kalaii Griffin II had a realization.

“I needed to drop calories quickly, but the trash bags sauna suits I was wearing would rip, so I decided to make my own, and that was the birth of ShredSkinz,” said Griffin, the company’s founder and CEO—and a former Portland resident.

ShredSkinz is the world’s first single-use sauna suit, and Griffin says it can increase metabolism by 20 percent and increase post-exercise weight loss by 47 percent. The product is made of 100 percent eco-friendly materials and can be used by everyone from the most serious professional and collegiate athletes to everyday people trying to get fit, detox or lose weight.

“If you wear one of these while you’re doing housework or just driving from home to the gym, you’ll be sweating,” Griffin said. “It’s a sweat machine.”

Griffin, a native of Springfield, Mass., graduated from UTEP in the spring with a degree in communications and said his goal was to play professional football. But as a father to a young son, his responsibility right now is to his family, and his sole focus is on growing the ShredSkinz brand.

With connections in college sports and the NFL, Griffin said he hopes to get ShredSkinz into colleges and universities, professional sports leagues and even in hotels and resorts.

“I’d love to sponsor a professional fighter and have them use our product to help them sweat and maintain their fighting weight,” Griffin said. “We’re active on social media, especially Instagram and Tik Tok, and we want people to send us their videos of them sweating with ShredSkinz.”

Griffin spent time living in Portland on Munjoy Hill and has fond memories of his time selling cars at Berlin City Nissan—an experience that will come in handy as he grows ShredSkinz.

“I enjoyed living in Maine, and my time there prepared me for marketing to areas around the country that weren’t always 70 degrees every day,” Griffin said.

Launching a business in the middle of a pandemic has presented plenty of challenges—ones Griffin’s using his past experience to navigate.

Mainers are active, especially people in Portland, Griffin said, so a ShredSkinz suit is perfect for anyone running or walking on the Eastern Promenade or Back Cove.

ShredSkinz suits are available on the company’s website, shredskinz.shop for $14.99 for a pack of five or $49.99 for a four-week challenge pack of 20 suits.

“I’ve got a lot more work to do, but I eventually want to get these online at Amazon and other retailers,” Griffin said. “It’s a long process, and we’re making sure everything is in order before we take the next step.”

Pennsylvania American Water Participates in the Fifth Annual Utility Scam Awareness Day on November 18

Pennsylvania American Water Participates in the Fifth Annual Utility Scam Awareness Day on November 18

MECHANICSBURG, Pa.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–
Pennsylvania American Water will join Utilities United Against Scams (UUAS) to recognize the fifth annual Utility Scam Awareness Day on Wednesday, Nov. 18. Utility Scam Awareness Day is part of the week-long International Scam Awareness Week, an advocacy and awareness campaign focused on educating customers and exposing the tactics used by scammers.

“The health and safety of our customers and employees are paramount to everything we do. Our customers should know that unless there is an emergency, our employees rarely show up at their home without an appointment,” said Pennsylvania American Water President Mike Doran. “If someone comes to your door claiming to be from a local utility and you are not expecting them, do not let them inside without seeing proper official company identification with their photo and company logo on it.”

UUAS, a consortium of more than 145 U.S. and Canadian electric, water, and natural gas utilities and their respective trade associations, continues to create awareness of common scams and new scam tactics being used during the COVID-19 pandemic. Through its work and with the help of customer reporting, UUAS has succeeded in removing from operation nearly 9,500 toll-free numbers used by scammers against utility customers.

“It is no surprise that scammers have been seeking to exploit the heightened anxiety of people coping with the pandemic,” said UUAS Founder and Executive Committee Chairman Jared Lawrence. “I am proud to report that UUAS’ education efforts and utilities’ well-publicized customer testimonials have prevented a drastic increase in victims. However, the relentless attempts by these criminals make it clear that we must continue to actively work to protect our customers and to keep scammers from casting confusion on our pandemic recovery messages.”

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, scammers have increased calls, texts, emails, and in-person tactics and are contacting utility customers asking for immediate payment to avoid service disconnection. At present, Pennsylvania American Water continues to suspend billing-related service shutoffs as it continues to help customers and communities through this public health emergency.

Pennsylvania American Water reminds customers that its service personnel wear uniforms, drive company-branded vehicles, and wear photo identification badges with the company’s logo. Residents are urged to take the time to ask for and examine the photo identification badge whenever an individual claiming to be a utility worker arrives at their home or business. Pennsylvania American Water also does not accept payment at a customer’s house. Customers with any suspicions should call 9-1-1, or Pennsylvania American Water’s customer service center at 1-800-565-7292.

“Customers need to be on high alert as we continue to see impostor utility scams rise across North America,” said UUAS Executive Director Monica Martinez. “Scammers demand money or personal information on the spot—usually with threatening language—and indicate that service will be disconnected immediately. Anyone and everyone, from senior households to small business owners, is at risk of being targeted.”

Visit www.utilitiesunited.org for more information and tips on how customers can protect themselves from impostor utility scams, and follow along with UUAS on Twitter and Facebook.

Pennsylvania American Water, a subsidiary of American Water (NYSE: AWK), is the largest investor owned water utility in the state, providing high-quality and reliable water and/or wastewater services to approximately 2.4 million people. With a history dating back to 1886, American Water is the largest and most geographically diverse U.S. publicly traded water and wastewater utility company. National Survey Reveals College Students’ Report Subpar Online Learning Experience, Mental Health and Social Impacts of the Pandemic

Over 92% of students want to return to campus in the spring even if schools remain virtual, psychological effects and economic difficulties show improvement, but the job loss percentage remains the same.

CHICAGO, Nov. 17, 2020 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — A recent survey of over 1,500 college students throughout the United States reveals how Covid-19 has impacted this demographic, including their mental state, sentiment about remote learning, personal and family’s finances, and more.

National student housing developer and manager Core Spaces emailed the survey to student residents at 23 of their properties across 16 cities in 14 states. The national analysis is the second that the developer has conducted since the beginning of the pandemic. Responses were collected from October 22 to October 30.

“The survey data strongly suggests that the social restrictions to stop the spread of the pandemic has had a direct effect on the wellbeing of our students,” says Marc Lifshin, founder and chief executive officer of Core Spaces. “The impacts of the pandemic have greatly affected our residents. With the college experience being severely limited as our country fights this disease, we continue to monitor feedback and customize creative ways to provide our residents with ways to safely stay connected and a place to thrive based on new information we receive.”

KEY FINDINGS:

Living preferences:

More students want to return to campus. Over 92% of respondents said they want to come back to campus when classes begin in the spring, compared with 89% from the summer survey.

87.4% of respondents plan to get back to their universities even if they continue online instruction in the spring, nearly 15% higher than the summer survey responses.

Economic impact / confidence:

40% of respondents said the pandemic resulted in economic difficulties for themselves and their families (23% less than was reported in summer). They were affected in the following ways:

  • They lost their job                                                               31.1%
  • Their job hours or pay were reduced                                  36.6%
  • One of their parents lost his or her job                               21.4%
  • One of their parents had hours or pay reduced                   36.6%

When it came to how students felt about their future job prospects considering the pandemic, nearly 86% felt very confident (27.3%) and somewhat confident (58.6%), while 14.1% reported they were not confident at all. The student sentiment on job outlook improved compared with the summer survey respondents who reported that 60% were much less confident (20%), and more than 40% felt somewhat less confident.

Remote learning & studying:

Nearly 65% of respondents said that the online class experience had been less than positive – half responded with feeling uninterested or indifferent (51.8%) to hating online classes (14.3%).

Over 87% of students said they would want to get to university (town) even if classes were 100% virtual (compared with 72.5% from the summer survey responses).

Nearly nine out of 10 (10% higher than reported during the summer) said they feel they’d be more successful studying remotely in their apartments vs. their family’s homes.

Confidence in being safe back at school and amongst peers:

Over 93% of respondents were either “very confident” (47.6%) or “somewhat confident” (45.6%) that their universities would take appropriate and available measures to help protect them and other students from spreading the virus.

Eight out of 10 either reported that their university is “doing everything they should be doing” (63.6%) or think the protocols are too strict (19.2%).

More than 92% of respondents were either “very confident” (50.5%) or “somewhat confident” (41.7%) that their student housing provider (Core Spaces) would take appropriate and available measures to help protect them and other student residents from spreading the virus.

The majority of students believe that their neighbors and peers are taking appropriate precautions to stop the spread of COVID-19. 83.6% think their peers and neighbors were “somewhat responsible” (57.9%) or being “very responsible” (25.7%).

COVID-19 Testing:

Over 76% of respondents have had a COVID-19 test since returning to campus this fall. Those who hadn’t yet been tested reported that convenience (55%) and cost or not wanting to pay for testing (14.5%) were the main factors.

  • Close to half of the tested respondents have had at least two tests since returning to school, some regularly testing multiple times per week.

Psychological impact:

Since Covid-19’s onset, students said they had experienced the following:

  • Sleep pattern has changed (52.9% now vs. 76.2% reported in the summer survey)
  • Feel more anxious or stressed (69.1% vs. 75.1% reported in the summer survey)
  • Feel more depressed or worried (43.3% vs. 55.5% reported in the summer survey)
  • Feel isolated or lonely (52.9%)
  • Seen a professional for physical or mental health (12.3% vs. 12% in the summer survey)

While there was a 12% reduction in respondents’ reported symptoms compared with summer survey responses, a greater number of students reported that they know someone that has experienced the following since the onset of COVID-19:

Sleep pattern has changed (63.8%)

  • Feel more anxious or stressed (75.85%)
  • Feel more depressed or worried (62.70%)
  • Feel isolated or lonely (65.33%)
  • Seen a professional for physical or mental health (31.28%)

The most significant challenge students reported during the pandemic was the social aspect – not having the ability to socialize with their peers (69.34%) was the most difficult.

The second most challenging issue students reported was online learning (68.44%), the third most difficult issue was dealing with uncertainty (64.08%).

Desire for vaccine:

When asked how likely they are to want a vaccine if/when it is made available, almost 75% said they were very likely (39.72%) and somewhat likely (35.22%) to want the vaccine, and 24.99% responded with not likely to want one.

In total, there were 1,550 respondents from 23 properties across 16 cities in 14 states. The top five universities/cities, in order of the highest rate of respondents, include University of South Carolina, Columbia (11.74%); *University of Florida, Gainesville (16.52%); *University of Arizona, Tucson (12.32%); *University of Kentucky, Lexington (10.65%); University of Mississippi University, Oxford, (6.39%).

[* represents two Core properties in the same city/campus]

“Supporting our residents and reducing the stress that students are feeling is our top priority,” added Lifshin. “We formed partnerships with Headspace, a mindfulness meditation app to offer 500 of our residents nationwide with an annual subscription that provides the needed relief from pressures that we saw students experiencing. Our partnership with Collective & Co., a human development company that provides professional, personal, and emotional growth tools to students and young professionals, allowed us to implement mindfulness sessions for our onsite staff across the country and residents starting with Columbia, SC, and Gainesville, FL, and we’re going to continue observing resident needs and adapting to them in meaningful ways.”

LAKEFIELD, Ontario, Nov. 17, 2020 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — PKA SoftTouch Inc’s Micro-Needle device has been awarded Top 10 Best invention award in the overall selection of the Top 10 Best Inventions in iCAN 2020. PKA’s device will revolutionize the 16 billion syringe market, one that has not seen any significant technology developments in over 170 years. The award was the only one to a Canadian company, and the invention was ranked second overall.

“The purpose of our single-shot, pre-filled, pre-measured device is simple: to deliver a drug to the body of the patient effectively and painlessly. Our revolutionary technology, the PKA SoftTouch Micro-Needle Device, achieves this with every single application,” said Dick Crawford, CEO and Co-founder of the pain-free micro-needle device. “About the size of a cork, our device, when properly applied to the skin of an animal or human, will result in a 95% to 97% delivery of the drug into the skin. San Joaquin County Partners with Ameresco to Complete Installation of 5.3 Megawatt Solar Array on Landfill Site

San Joaquin County Partners with Ameresco to Complete Installation of 5.3 Megawatt Solar Array on Landfill Site

Public-Private partnership on second project to harness renewable energy generation for utility cost savings and sustainability benefits

STOCKTON, Calif. & FRAMINGHAM, Mass.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–
During today’s San Joaquin County Board of Supervisor meeting, Ameresco, Inc. (NYSE: AMRC), a leading energy efficiency and renewable energy company, announced that it has completed construction on a 5.3 MW-dc ground-mount solar energy system at San Joaquin County’s Foothill Landfill. This is Ameresco’s second renewable energy project with the County and will help reduce their utility costs through California’s Renewable Energy Self-Generation Bill Credit Transfer (RES-BCT) program.

San Joaquin County partnered with Ameresco to develop, own and operate a ground-mount solar photovoltaic system at the Foothill Landfill in Linden, California. Funded by a power purchase agreement (PPA), Ameresco installed 13,770 solar modules rated at 385W-DC each, as well as 29 solar inverters rated at 125kW-AC each. Under a separate agreement with San Joaquin County, Ameresco constructed a 4.3 MW landfill gas to energy plant at the same landfill in 2014.

“San Joaquin County, and its local communities, have long prioritized the development of renewable energy resources, both for reducing emissions and supplementing existing electricity generation,” said Kathy Miller, Chair of the San Joaquin County Board of Supervisors. “In addition to its environmental impact, the solar energy system will provide further utility cost savings to our region, which will directly benefit residents and local governments’ ability to better serve its constituents.”

The solar energy system will generate approximately 10,473,000 kWh of electricity in year one. This equates to a reduction of 7,405 tons of CO2 emissions or 854 homes’ energy use for one year. In addition to the significant electrical savings, the County will also receive a $500,000 upfront lease payment for the use of the land, infusing revenue into the County from day one.

“As a leader in green energy, San Joaquin County is always looking for ways to provide an improved environment for our residents while at the same time providing cost savings to taxpayers,” said San Joaquin County Supervisor, Chuck Winn. “The County recognized that the Foothill Landfill site in Linden had a large amount of undeveloped land. Thanks to a previous project implemented at the site in partnership with Ameresco, we knew there was a similar opportunity to do something productive with the site. Dominion Energy’s Project Plant It! Celebrates 15 Years & Adds Bee Pollinator Program

– Participants to receive free packets of wildflower seeds that attract bees & other pollinators, in addition to free redbud tree seedlings

– Organizations can enroll now online to receive seed packets while supplies last

– New educational resources in English and Spanish teach students about essential role of bees and other pollinators to nation’s food system and environmental sustainability

PR Newswire

RICHMOND, Va., Nov. 17, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — Project Plant It!, the environmental education initiative created by Dominion Energy in 2007, is abuzz with a big announcement for 2021. A new bee pollinator program is joining the popular tree-planting program. In addition to the free redbud tree seedling that program participants typically receive in the spring, they also will get a free packet of wildflower seeds specifically designed to attract bees and other pollinators.

“It’s so exciting that Project Plant It! is still growing as we prepare to celebrate the milestone 15th observance of the program in 2021,” said Melanie Rapp Beale, community affairs manager at Dominion Energy and Project Plant It! coordinator. “We wanted to commemorate the occasion by creating an educational and fun feature that would complement our tree program and align with Project Plant It’s mission to teach the next generation how to be good stewards of our environment.”

Project Plant It! is available for students of all ages and grade levels. Schools, scout troops, civic and faith-based groups, environment clubs and other entities that work with youth are eligible to request redbud tree seedlings and wildflower seed packets online now at projectplantit.com while supplies last.

Pollinators, such as bees, butterflies, hummingbirds, moths and bats, play an essential role in supporting our nation’s food system and the sustainability of our environment. Bees, in particular, are vital to the pollination of many fruits, nuts and vegetables that Americans enjoy on a daily basis. However, the number of bees is shrinking due to factors such as pesticides and loss of habitat.

Project Plant It! aims to increase bee populations by having students plant pollinator gardens at their homes, on school grounds, or in their communities. “Also, bees love redbud blossoms, so our tree program and our pollinator program work well together,” added Beale.

The Educator Resources page of the Project Plant It! website has added a Pollinator Toolbox with a variety of hands-on instructional materials for the new pollinator program, including five science-focused lesson plans, a list of books and online resources, a participant certificate, and more. Most of the pollinator materials are available in English and Spanish.

In 2020, Project Plant It! distributed 60,000 Eastern Redbud tree seedlings despite impacts caused by the Coronavirus pandemic. Distribution was halted in the spring and the Arbor Day Foundation was able to refrigerate the seedlings to allow them to remain viable until new plans could be created to distribute them in the fall. In total, 53 organizations in six states were able to receive and distribute the seedlings under the revised plans.

The Project Plant It! website still has a toolbox of resources about the many benefits of trees to the ecosystem, including STEM-based lesson plans and interactive games, among other materials. The tree seedlings and the wildflower seed packets will be shipped to participants prior to Arbor Day (April 30, 2021). “National Wildflower Week is May 3-7 and June is National Pollinator Month, so there are lots of opportunities in 2021 to celebrate trees and pollinators by participating in Project Plant It!,” Beale concluded.
