UPDATE — Canada-Japan Support Advances Xanadu and Mitsubishi Chemical Partnership on Quantum Semiconductor Research

TORONTO, Aug. 27, 2026 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Xanadu Quantum Technologies Limited (“Xanadu“; NASDAQ/TSX: XNDU), a leading photonic quantum computing company, has announced the next phase of its collaboration with Mitsubishi Chemical, a major Japanese chemical manufacturer, to advance semiconductor fabrication technologies using quantum computing algorithms. This next phase is supported by national innovation programs from both the Canadian and Japanese governments, aiming to scale Xanadu and Mitsubishi’s previous work in simulating a vital process in next-generation semiconductor fabrication: extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography. Bringing together both Canadian and Japanese expertise in quantum computing and materials science, this collaboration underscores a shared commitment to driving global innovation in the semiconductor industry through quantum technologies.

EUV lithography enables the creation of powerful chips used across multiple industries, such as mobile, AI, and advanced computing, and is crucial for current and next-generation semiconductor manufacturing. However, its efficiency is often hindered by radiation-induced blurring, an inherently quantum phenomenon that remains a major bottleneck for classical simulations. In phase one of Xanadu and Mitsubishi’s collaboration, the two companies demonstrated that quantum algorithms can accurately model key aspects of EUV lithography, specifically the optical properties of the photoresists used to etch lithographic patterns. The next phase of the collaboration aims to develop an industry-oriented workflow that will take parameters derived from Xanadu’s quantum computing simulations and integrate them directly into Mitsubishi’s multi-scale models to predict blur. The result will be a fault-tolerant quantum computing (FTQC)-ready software pipeline designed to identify materials that prevent blurring and support the development of semiconductor materials for next-generation manufacturing.

Xanadu plans to provide a concrete demonstration and roadmap for how quantum computing can contribute to the development of EUV resist materials through this collaboration. This second phase of the collaboration is being advanced with support from the National Research Council of Canada Industrial Research Assistance Program (NRC IRAP) and from Japan’s Strategic Innovation Promotion Program (SIP). The relevant SIP project is led by the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) and the Global Research and Development Center for Business by Quantum-AI Technology (G-QuAT). The collaboration aims to further strengthen research and business collaboration between the two countries’ technology sectors.

Xanadu has previously received advisory services and more than $800,000 in funding from NRC IRAP, supporting its R&D in quantum computing across several projects, which helped lay the groundwork for this advancement.

“Our collaboration with Mitsubishi bridges quantum simulation and semiconductor fabrication, eliminating a critical manufacturing bottleneck and supporting the development of differentiated semiconductor materials for next-generation manufacturing. The support from the Canadian and Japanese national innovation programs underscores the importance of this partnership to advance the semiconductor industry globally,” said Dr. Christian Weedbrook, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Xanadu.

“This partnership expands on Mitsubishi’s previously successful collaboration with Xanadu, where we demonstrated the utility of quantum computing in simulating EUV resist materials for semiconductor manufacturing,” said Dr. Qi Gao, Distinguished Scientist, Analysis Technology Laboratory, Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation. “With support from national innovation programs and research organizations in both countries, we’re excited to bring together Canadian and Japanese expertise in quantum computing and materials science.”

“This project is a great example of connecting cutting-edge quantum computing research with real industrial challenges. In the critical field of semiconductor materials development, we expect this Japan-Canada collaboration to accelerate the real-world implementation of quantum technology. At SIP, we look forward to the new industrial value this initiative will create,” said Dr. Masahiro Horibe, Sub-Program Director, Cross-ministerial SIP and Deputy Director, G-QuAT, AIST.

This shared initiative between Xanadu and Mitsubishi aims to showcase quantum computing innovation on the world stage while advancing critical quantum simulation capabilities for the global semiconductor industry. By bridging quantum innovation with industrial application, this continued partnership will establish a blueprint for quantum-driven material discovery. As Xanadu and Mitsubishi Chemical advance this joint pipeline, their work aims to unlock commercial value for early FTQC systems, while driving the future of global semiconductor fabrication.

New Patent Intelligence Report Reveals the Hidden Competitors in the Race to Build AI Smart Glasses

PatentVest’s newest PV Pulse analysis finds Apple’s and Microsoft’s AI smart glasses–relevant patent portfolios outrank Google’s, Snap’s, and Samsung’s — despite neither company selling an AI smart glasses product

Dallas,TX, Aug. 27, 2026 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — PatentVest, a provider of patent-based competitive intelligence for technology, IP, and innovation leaders, today released its newest PV Pulse report, “Who’s Actually Building the AI in AI Smart Glasses?” The report analyzes validated patent activity across 12 companies shaping the category — the seven companies currently building or shipping AI smart glasses, two component suppliers whose IP sits underneath nearly every product in the space, and three large technology companies with no shipping product at all.

The analysis finds that two of those three non-shipping companies, Apple and Microsoft, hold some of the strongest AI-capability patent positions in the entire category. Apple’s validated portfolio — an estimated 1,550 patent families — is larger than Google’s or Snap’s, and ranks in the top three across every AI capability area PatentVest measured, including eye tracking, gesture, perception, and voice. Microsoft’s AR-rendering portfolio (409 families) is nearly tied with Meta’s (445) — the exact patent category behind the Ray-Ban Meta and Orion strategy. Neither Apple nor Microsoft sells a single pair of AI smart glasses today.

“Ask most people in this industry who’s actually leading the AI smart glasses race, and they’ll name the companies with products on shelves,” the report states. “The patent office is telling a different story.”

AMONG THE REPORT’S OTHER FINDINGS:

  • Meta holds the largest validated portfolio in the category, at approximately 1,900 patent families, with a clear lead in AR rendering, gesture, eye tracking, perception, and wearable form factor.
  • Samsung’s widely cited 1,525-family patent count is misleading: split by legal entity, Samsung Electronics’ legitimate glasses-system portfolio is closer to 550 validated families, while the larger share of Samsung Display’s count is upstream OLED-panel manufacturing IP, not smart-glasses technology.
  • EssilorLuxottica — Meta’s own manufacturing partner for Ray-Ban Meta — holds an estimated 530 validated patent families on its own, more than XREAL, Xiaomi, and Vuzix combined (approximately 380), despite not being a glasses brand itself.
  • While Meta, Google, Snap, Xiaomi, and XREAL all reached their highest single-year filing count in 2022, Microsoft’s filing activity peaked in 2017 and has cooled since — even as its AR-rendering portfolio remains nearly tied with Meta’s.

The companies most people assume are competing in AI smart glasses and the companies actually building the underlying IP behind the category turn out to be two different lists, a gap this report is built to surface for anyone tracking the space.”

The full report includes a company-by-company breakdown across eight AI capability battlegrounds — AR rendering, voice, perception, gesture, eye tracking, privacy, memory/agent, and wearable form factor, along with jurisdictional filing data, portfolio maturity analysis, and a look at which companies built their AI capabilities organically versus through acquisition.

The full PV Pulse report, “Who’s Actually Building the AI in AI Smart Glasses?,” is now available here:https://insights.patentvest.com/whos-actually-building-the-ai-in-ai-smart-glasses

AV Awarded Contract for Three Autonomous Helicopters in Support of NASA’s SkyFall Mission to Mars

AV Awarded Contract for Three Autonomous Helicopters in Support of NASA’s SkyFall Mission to Mars

AV partnering with NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) to unlock new research capabilities above and below the Martian surface ahead of a planned 2028 launch.

ARLINGTON, Va.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–
AeroVironment, Inc. (“AV”), a global defense technology leader, today announced that its MacCready Works advanced solutions team has been awarded a contract for the co-design and co-manufacture of three Mars helicopters for NASA’s SkyFall mission with the agency’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), taking the project from future concept to a formally funded Mars science mission and a path toward launch in late 2028.

This press release features multimedia. View the full release here: https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20260827821137/en/

SkyFall is the first mission to fly a team of three instrument-carrying helicopters on Mars, demonstrating a fully integrated system capable of autonomous atmospheric entry and powered descent.

AV and JPL are building on their experience as co‑developers of NASA’s Ingenuity Mars Helicopter, which completed 72 historic flights at Jezero Crater. Together, the teams are evolving Ingenuity‑derived designs into SkyFall: an active NASA mission under the Science Mission Directorate, optimized to deliver high‑value science for the Mars Exploration Program.

“With Ingenuity, AV and JPL proved we could fly on Mars. Now, with SkyFall, we’re taking AV’s high‑volume uncrewed systems mindset into planetary exploration and showing that Mars helicopters can be built as a repeatable product line, not a one‑off delivery,” said Jeff Rodrian, Head of MacCready Works, AV’s advanced research and development organization. “It’s also a powerful example of public‑private partnership; AV and JPL building on Ingenuity’s success to create a helicopter platform that NASA can apply to many different science missions over multiple launch windows.”

AV is leading the design and production of key elements of the SkyFall helicopters, including rotor systems, airframes, structures, avionics integration, and accommodation for multiple science payloads. JPL is leading the design and development of the power system, electronics, algorithms and software. The helicopters will carry a JPL‑designed ground‑penetrating radar (GPR) to look below the Martian surface, delivering new insight into shallow subsurface ice, central to both Mars science and future human exploration.

New to this mission is a new “SkyFall maneuver.” This technique releases the three helicopters directly from the carrier spacecraft into the Martian atmosphere, where they separate, deploy, descend, and land under their own power. By eliminating the need for a single-use lander stage or a host rover (as Ingenuity required with Perseverance), this approach significantly reduces the technical and financial risk of getting to the Martian surface.

JPL’s GPR instruments carried by the helicopters are designed to map subsurface ice at fine spatial resolution, enabling more precise assessment of where water ice is located and implications for science and future human exploration. In addition, each aircraft will host instruments that will provide data on the Martian atmosphere, dust particle transport, and other key environmental processes.

“Just like here on Earth, Mars helicopters can cover distance quickly and can go places that might be impossible to reach by ground,” said Will Pomerantz, Head of Space Ventures at AV. “The three SkyFall helicopters are going to show us parts of Mars we’ve never seen before and return mountains of data for scientists to pour over. The science community may guide these helicopters to places where the ground penetrating radar can map out the precise location of ice below the Martian surface.”

NASA currently plans a launch window in November 2028, followed by a cruise to Mars, with arrival timing tuned to local time, dust conditions, and power needs.

“We wanted a partner who could help reshape how our global business connects and trades,” said Mike Whitaker, COO and CIO, BGC Group. “With IPC One, we’ve replaced complexity with a unified, cloud-enabled platform that empowers our teams to move faster, collaborate more effectively, and stay focused on delivering value to clients.”

With IPC One, BGC will streamline operations, improve communications efficiency, and enhance the experience for brokers and traders. IPC’s global financial markets ecosystem will give BGC broader counterparty access, greater operational agility, and a more connected trading environment across its global business.

“When a global market leader like BGC chooses IPC One, it reinforces a broader industry shift toward a next generation platform to power the trading ecosystem,” said Kurt Adams, Chief Executive Officer of IPC Systems. “We’re proud to expand our relationship with BGC and support its focus on operational efficiency, productivity, and future growth.”
