Accenture’s new report—“Gaming: the new superplatform” — analyzes data from 4,000 gamers across four of the largest gaming markets — China, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States — to understand gamers’ needs and the drivers behind the industry’s massive growth.

The gaming industry has increased by half a billion players in the past three years, totaling 2.7 billion people globally. The report predicts more than 400 million new gamers are expected by the end of 2023. The profiles of these new joiners are also changing: 60% are women, 30% are under 25 years old and one-third identify as non-white. Whereas respondents who identified as longtime gamers are 61% male, 79% over 25 years old and 76% identifying as white.

“The emergence of new gaming platforms and changing demographics are pushing gaming businesses away from being product-centric to becoming experience-oriented platforms,” said Seth Schuler, managing director with Accenture’s Software & Platforms industry group. “The industry must balance the needs of its newest adopters, who care more deeply about their online interactions, with the expectations of gaming loyalists who remain the industry’s most lucrative customers.”

As the gaming community continues to grow, the social aspect is an increasingly key aspect to gamers’ overall experiences. 84% of respondents say video games help them connect with others with similar interests, while three-quarters of them recognize that more of their social interactions now happen on gaming platforms.

According to the survey, gamers are spending an average 16 hours a week playing, eight hours a week watching or participating in game streams and six hours a week interacting in game forums and communities. These social interactions are one of the key drivers behind online gaming’s growth: about three-in-four gamers indicate they expect online gaming to become a larger part of their gaming experience in the future.

“Beyond its already tremendous size, the gaming industry has had a significant global impact on entertainment and culture, spanning successful movie franchises, arena-based competitions, toys and more,” said Robin Murdoch, global Software & Platform lead at Accenture. “As we watch this influence expand, we’re seeing the emergence of gaming as an ecosystem of superplatforms where players can meet, communicate, watch live-streamed concerts, shop or listen to music.”

These findings are part of a three-part series looking at the changing faces of gaming, from the industry’s overall growth to its challenges and opportunities ahead. To read the full report, please visit https://www.accenture.com/us-en/insights/software-platforms/gaming-the-next-super-platform.

Research Methodology

The research is based on data collected via an online survey with 4,000 consumers who spend at least four hours per week playing video games. The sample is evenly distributed across four countries: China, Japan, the US, and the UK. We also conducted more than one dozen in-depth interviews with industry executives from gaming companies including Activision Blizzard, EA, Evertoon, Niantic, Razer, Square Enix, Samsung, Splash Damage and Tencent, among others.

Cybercrime Support Network and Zelle® Partner to Build Awareness of Financial Fraud and Scam Prevention

Ann Arbor, Michigan, April 29, 2021 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Cybercrime Support Network (CSN) today announced that Early Warning Services, LLC, the network operator of Zelle®, has joined the nonprofit collaboration as a lead sponsor. With cybercrime on the rise and the use of digital payment systems continuing to grow across the U.S., it’s essential to educate the public on how to protect themselves. Zelle® and CSN will work together to spread awareness and educate consumers and small businesses on financial fraud and scams.

Pay it Safe – Resources and Tips for Safe Payments

An April 2021 study commissioned by Zelle® unveils key findings in consumer behavior around financial literacy. About a quarter of consumers surveyed report being a victim of a scam, and almost half report knowing someone who was scammed. Through its Pay It Safe initiatives, Zelle® helps educate consumers on protecting themselves and their money:

  • Only send money to those you trust.
  • Beware of payment scams.
  • Treat Zelle® (or any digital payment system) like cash.

By partnering with nonprofits, Zelle® is extending its focus on the consumer protection of fraud and scam issues related to current events, including COVID-19. As a sponsor of CSN, the company continues its obligation to help consumers transition safely to digital banking services through education.

“The Federal Trade Commission’s data shows that of reported fraud last year, in the fourth quarter alone, losses involving some form of payment system (credit cards, gift cards, wire or bank transfers) exceeded $434M. It’s not surprising that financial fraud and purchase scam resources are some of our most sought after on FightCybercrime.org,” said Kristin Judge, CSN’s CEO. “We are honored to collaborate with Zelle® to provide scam and fraud resources to reach even more individuals and small businesses impacted by cybercrime.”

Early Warning’s Director of Consumer Marketing, Alexis Castorina, and Sr. Director of Network Operating Rules, Julie Jeffer, will serve on the CSN advisory board, sharing their expertise and guidance for CSN’s growing programs.

“As banking continues to evolve, it’s important for us as a company to invest in consumer advocacy opportunities that help educate individuals and small businesses on digital banking safety and ways they can protect their identities online,” said Castorina. “Through our partnership, CSN’s educational materials will be made available to all of our Zelle Network® partner financial institutions for distribution to their customers.”

Empire’s family of brands partners with Second Harvest with the goal of diverting 31 million pounds of food and approximately 41 million kilograms of GHG emissions annually

Empire to launch the Second Harvest Food Rescue app nationally at major banner stores and warehouses to divert surplus food to support local charities

STELLARTON, Nova Scotia, April 29, 2021 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Empire and Second Harvest have formed a national partnership to implement the Second Harvest Food Rescue App at Sobeys, Safeway, IGA, Foodland, FreshCo, Thrifty Foods, and Voilà. Second Harvest’s food rescue app will enable Empire’s banners to divert food waste and offer even more access to fresh, healthy food to Canadian families in need.

“The number of Canadians experiencing food insecurity has significantly increased since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the need for access to healthy food has never been greater,” said Lori Nikkel, Chief Executive Officer, Second Harvest. “Our food rescue app enables businesses with surplus perishable food to quickly and easily connect with non-profits who serve people in need. This partnership will support our communities most vulnerable and reduce food waste. We are proud to partner with Empire to further our shared mission to reduce the harmful environmental impacts of food waste and support local communities across Canada through this terrible health crisis.”

Empire plans to implement the app in its grocery banners over the next 18 months, including Sobeys, Safeway, IGA, Foodland, FreshCo and Thrifty Foods. Empire will use the app in its distribution centres and its e-commerce business. Once operational in all of these locations, Empire expects to rescue an estimated 31 million pounds of food, and thereby avert approximately 41 million kilograms of GHG emissions annually – the equivalent of taking more than 8,600 cars off the road.

“More than half of the food produced in Canada goes to waste, and yet one in seven Canadian families struggles with food insecurity. As Canada’s second largest national grocer, we have the reach and the responsibility to redirect this food into the communities who need it most,” said Mohit Grover, Senior Vice-President of Innovation and Strategy, Empire. “This partnership with Second Harvest is a significant step towards achieving our goal to reduce our food waste by 50 per cent by 2025.”

Second Harvest and Empire have been partners in the Greater Toronto Area since 2011, and recently completed a 12-week pilot of the food rescue program in 16 stores in Ontario, Manitoba, and British Columbia. The results of the pilot were very promising: more than 94,000 meals were donated to more than 30 community organizations, averting more than 110,000 kilograms of greenhouse gas emissions.
