About the EVICTION Trial

EVICTION is a first-in-human, dose escalation (Part 1) and cohort expansion (Part 2) clinical trial of ICT01 in patients with various advanced solid or hematologic cancers that have exhausted standard of care treatment options. Part 1 is a basket trial designed to characterize the preliminary safety, tolerability, and pharmacodynamic activity  of ICT01 as monotherapy (Group A: solid tumors; Group B: hematologic tumors) and in combination with pembrolizumab (Group C: solid tumors). Group A includes bladder, breast, colorectal, gastric, melanoma, ovarian, prostate, and pancreatic cancer, Group B includes AML, ALL, follicular lymphoma, and diffuse large B cell lymphoma, and Group C includes bladder, HNSCC,  melanoma, and NSCLC. Basket trials represent a clinical trial design that allows new drugs to be tested rapidly in a range of indications, providing initial results on multiple parameters that can contribute to an accelerated development timeline.  More information on the EVICTION trial can be found at clinicaltrials.gov(NCT04243499).

About ICT01

ICT01 is a humanized, anti-BTN3A (also known as CD277) monoclonal antibody that selectively activates γ9δ2 T cells, which are part of the innate immune system that is responsible for immunosurveillance for malignancy and infection. The 3 isoforms of BTN3A targeted by ICT01 are expressed on the surface of innate (e.g., γδ T cells and NK cells) and adaptive immune cells (T cells and B cells) and are overexpressed on a number of solid tumors (e.g., bladder, colorectal, melanoma, ovarian, pancreatic, lung) and hematologic cancers (e.g., leukemia & lymphoma). BTN3A is essential for the activation of the anti-tumor immune response of γ9δ2 T cells.

ICT01 selectively activates circulating γ9δ2 T cells that leads to migration of γ9δ2 T cells out of the circulation and into target tissue (e.g., tumors or infection site), while also activating the tumor-resident γ9δ2 T cells to directly kill malignant cells, which is accompanied by secretion of two key inflammatory cytokines, IFNg and TNFa, that expand the anti-tumor immune response. ICT01 has been shown to have anti-tumor activity against a range of cancers in in vitro and in vivo tumor models.

About
IMCHECK THERAPEUTICS

ImCheck Therapeutics is designing and developing a new generation of immunotherapeutic antibodies targeting butyrophilins, a novel super-family of immunomodulators.

As demonstrated by lead clinical-stage program ICT01, which has a mechanism of action to simultaneously modulate innate and adaptive immunity, ImCheck’s “first-in-class” activating antibodies may be able to produce superior clinical results as compared to the first-generation of immune checkpoint inhibitors and, when used in combination, to overcome resistance to this group of agents. In addition, preclinical experiments with ImCheck’s antagonist antibodies have shown their potential as treatments for a wide range of autoimmune diseases.

Co-founder of the Marseille Immunopole cluster, ImCheck benefits from support from Prof. Daniel Olive (INSERM, CNRS, Institut Paoli Calmettes, Aix-Marseille Université), a worldwide leader in γδ T cells and butyrophilins research; from the experience of an expert management team; and from the commitment of leading US and European investors.

New study in Quebec long-term care facilities to investigate the science behind why so many residents had severe cases of COVID-19

MONTREAL, March 11, 2021 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Across Canada, but particularly in Quebec, long-term care facilities have accounted for a disproportionate number of COVID-19 deaths. The Government of Canada, through its COVID-19 Immunity Task Force (CITF), is supporting a new $2.7 million study aimed at identifying the factors putting each person at risk of developing severe COVID-19 symptoms and medical complications that may lead to a fatal disease.

“We still do not understand why some long-term care residents have gotten so sick and died of COVID-19, whereas others, at the same facility, have had milder versions of the disease or have not been infected at all,” says Donald Vinh, MD, an infectious disease and immunity expert at the Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre (RI-MUHC) and an associate professor at McGill University. “Our study brings together immunological, biochemical, and psychosocial expertise to identify key factors that determine severe COVID-19 symptoms and complications in the elderly. If we can identify elderly people at greater risk of developing medical complications from COVID-19, it can guide better infection control measures and prioritize medical care to increase the chance that these people will have better treatment outcomes. The hope is to help avoid unnecessary hospitalization and in so doing, reduce the use of health care resources.”

The research team is multi-institutional and multi-disciplinary, involving the Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre (RI-MUHC), Université de Montréal, Institut Universitaire de Gériatrie de Montréal (IUGM) and its Research Center (CRIUGM), Douglas Research Centre, McGill University’s Department of Psychiatry, and Concordia University’s Department of Psychology. The study is being carried out in partnership with two health networks (CIUSSS Centre Sud and CIUSSS de l’Ouest-de-l’Île-de-Montréal).

The study aims to recruit 850 participants in public residential and long-term care facilities and in private seniors’ homes in Montreal. The team will take blood samples to compare the immune response in residents who were never infected, residents who were infected but had no or few symptoms, residents who had moderate cases of COVID-19, and residents who had severe cases of the disease.

The study will also look at the relationship between immune status, markers of inflammation, psychosocial factors and the severity of COVID-19 symptoms. “In public residential and long-term care facilities, a large proportion of patients present some form of cognitive impairment,” explains Jean-Philippe Gouin, PhD, Associate Professor, Psychology, Concordia University. “We will first examine whether there is a correlation between psychosocial issues and more severe cases of COVID-19, and second,” Dr. Gouin continues, “whether a COVID-19 infection is associated with increased psychiatric symptoms, sleep disturbances, and cognitive impairment among long-term care residents.”

Cardiovascular issues, including arterial hypertension and coagulation dysfunction (not being able to properly control blood clotting), can lead to more severe cases of COVID-19. According to a study published in the European Heart Journal1, patients with high blood pressure admitted to hospital with COVID-19 are twice as likely to die as those without the condition. It is estimated that almost 20% of patients with COVID-19 have significant coagulation disorders. In addition, some vaccinated patients may develop blood clots (thrombosis) after healing from COVID-19. A team led by Hélène Girouard, PhD, Professor, Faculty of Medicine, Université de Montréal, will seek to identify measurable indicators associated with high blood pressure and coagulation dysfunction that could be predictors of more severe COVID-19 cases. This will inform treatments to prevent COVID-19 complications.

“COVID-19 has been catastrophic among the elderly in long-term care facilities and studies like this one are needed so that we can better protect them going forward,” says Dr. Catherine Hankins, CITF Co-Chair. “Vaccines will help to make an enormous difference in protecting Canadians from COVID-19.”

“Vaccines are being rolled-out in long-term care facilities across Canada to help protect the elderly, who have been disproportionately impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic,” says Dr. Theresa Tam, Canada’s Chief Public Health Officer. “This study will help provide greater insight into the early immune response of elderly Canadians to this viral infection, and how the immune response—and the subsequent severity of COVID-19 and variants of concern—is affected by cardiovascular and psycho-social factors.”

About the COVID-19 Immunity Task Force

In late April 2020, the Government of Canada established the COVID-19 Immunity Task Force with a two-year mandate. The Task Force is overseen by a Leadership Group of volunteers that includes leading Canadian scientists and experts from universities and healthcare facilities across Canada who are focused on understanding the nature of immunity arising from the novel coronavirus that causes COVID-19. To that end, the CITF is supporting numerous studies to determine the extent of SARS-CoV-2 infection in Canada (in the general population as well as in specific communities and priority populations), understand the nature of immunity following infection, develop improved antibody testing methods, and help monitor the effectiveness and safety of vaccines as they are rolled out across Canada. The Task Force and its Secretariat work closely with a range of partners, including governments, public health agencies, institutions, health organizations, research teams, other task forces, and engages communities and stakeholders. Most recently, the Task Force has been asked to support vaccine surveillance, effectiveness and safety as part of its overall objective to generate data and ideas that inform interventions aimed at slowing—and ultimately stopping—the spread of SARS-CoV-2 in Canada. In response to this market trend, Aurora Mobile recently launched a Video as a Service solution (“JG VaaS”) and a Unification Messages System (“JG UMS”) to help developers refine operations and drive higher growth. JG VaaS enables mobile APP developers to provide relevant user-friendly short video content in their apps, allowing developers to effectively arouse user interest, optimize user experience, and increase users’ average daily time spent and user stickiness. JG UMS has integrated seven major messaging channels, including mobile Apps, WeChat official accounts, WeChat mini-programs, Short Message Service (“SMS”), emails, Fuwu Alipay and DingTalk, and enables enterprise users to conduct a multi-channel unified messaging and management approach through one integrated messaging platform.

Fraser Institute News Release: Only 1% of minimum wage earners work more than five years at minimum wage

TORONTO, March 11, 2021 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Despite claims to the contrary, minimum wage increases do little to lower poverty rates and can actually hurt low-income workers, finds a new study released today by the Fraser Institute, an independent, non-partisan Canadian public policy think-tank.

“As an anti-poverty tool, minimum wage hikes are largely ineffective and can actually hurt the very people they’re supposed to help,” said Philip Cross, senior fellow at the Fraser Institute and author of The Minimum Wage, Lost Jobs, and Poverty in Canada.

In recent years, all 10 provinces raised the minimum wage for workers—despite the realities of minimum wage policy. For example:

  • Very few minimum wage earners (slightly more than one per cent) work for more than five years at the minimum wage.
  • Minimum wage increases can increase unemployment because businesses often respond by laying off workers, reducing work hours and/or hiring less (or not at all). For example, after examining Ontario’s proposed 32 per cent minimum wage hike in 2018 and 2019, the province’s Financial Accountability Office estimated employment would fall by 50,000 jobs.
  • Minimum wage increases have little impact on poverty rates because most people who receive the minimum wage live in households that already earn higher incomes (i.e. the majority of minimum wage earners are young people living with their parents).

“If governments want to help low-skilled workers and people entering the workforce, they should implement policies, such as competitive tax rates, which help businesses grow and create opportunities for Canadians,” Cross said.

Largest-ever installation of LightAir Health+

Strategic order from the American International School of Bucharest

PR Newswire

STOCKHOLM, March 11, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — LightAir has received an order for a large installation of air purifiers and virus inhibitors within its Professional Solutions segment. The American International School of Bucharest has ordered an air purification capacity of approximately 100,000 m3/h, with complementary antiviral technology corresponding to more than 300 classrooms.

The deal was secured by LightAir’s Romanian partner Wellnessist and confirms the potential of the LightAir Health+ offer, targeting offices and schools.

“As a school, we have a great responsibility towards our students and our staff regarding our work environment,” says Peter Welch, Director of the American International School of Bucharest. “We have now found a solution for efficient air purification for the entire school. In addition to air purification, through LightAir we also have a way to actively fight viruses. Our investment provides an environment free of pollution and limits the spread of viruses, both in the case of the ongoing pandemic and annual flu attacks.”

LightAir Health+ is an innovative solution for air purification that consists of two complementary technologies. First, highly efficient air purifiers that lower the concentration of air pollutants through filtration. As much as 99.99% of traffic pollutants, viruses and ultrafine particles are removed from the indoor air. The second component consists of patented virus inhibitors, which actively seek out and destroy residual airborne viruses in the air. The two technologies together thus provide double protection against airborne viruses.

“Of course, it’s gratifying that we have won this highly competitive tender in Bucharest. We offer unique levels of operating costs, degree of purification and noise level for air purification within schools and offices,” says Joakim Hansson, Business Area Manager of LightAir. “This success is a result of our focus on learning what really works in schools and offices. The Scandinavian and Dutch markets have shown the way in the last twelve months. Based on our experiences there, we are now working intensively to implement our offering in a number of key markets.”

In the Nordic region, LightAir Health+ is mainly offered on a subscription basis, where clean air is provided as a service – including installation and ongoing maintenance. The service does not tie up capital and comes with a lifetime warranty regarding hardware functionality.

From Video Compression to Immersive Media, Tencent Scientists Set Sights on Multimedia Solutions in Post-Pandemic Era

PR Newswire

SHENZHEN, China, March 11, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — A burst in demand for high-quality video came close to breaking the Internet during the COVID-19 outbreak. In a post-pandemic world, researchers at Tencent (Tencent Holdings Ltd, 0700.HK), a leading technology company, are making endeavors to maintain high quality media service while easing bandwidth shortage with cutting-edge audio and video technologies.

The quality of video sent over global networks has soared as people demand more vivid and realistic experiences during the pandemic. This requires new standards to match the technology, Shan Liu, Tencent distinguished scientist and general manager of Tencent Media Lab, suggested in a keynote speech at the MIT-China Innovation and Entrepreneurship Forum annual summit Wednesday while discussing the future of immersive media and virtual reality.

“Since March 2020, global video traffic has surged and network bandwidth has been under great pressure,” explains Liu. “Regional disconnections caused by excessive network usage have repeatedly occurred around the world.”

Liu noted one of the primary focuses of Tencent Media Lab is media compression and transmission – the technology that makes it possible to send increasingly lifelike images across the Internet. Compression shrinks the size of media files by looking for repetition or unimportant information – leading to more efficient use of bandwidth.

“By 2022, the portion of ultra HD content will further increase to about a quarter of the total internet video bandwidth,” predicted Liu. At the same time, the size of China’s VR content market has continued to double or triple each year since 2016, she said.

Affordable VR headsets are signaling a disruptive shift in technology not seen since the jump from still photographs to movies. Consumer VR is currently very basic but leaps in transmission speed represented by technology like 5G have the power to change this quickly. Nonetheless, a major bottleneck is transmitting enough data to let someone experience a scene as if they were really there.

Toward the Immersive Media Future

Tencent Media Lab is an active participant in the international standard organizations that agree on formats such as MPEG that allow computers to easily share increasingly large audio, video and virtual reality files.

Researchers at the lab are trying to work out the standards and products that could deliver the next step in the immersive revolution – photorealistic virtual reality in real time.

Liu noted that Tencent Media Lab has already developed a point cloud system that allows regular people to create 3D models for virtual reality using pictures captured from a normal mobile phone. Potential business applications for this technology include allowing people to virtually share exhibitions or tour real estate properties – in cinematic detail. The potential is incredible.

One challenge, according to Tencent Media Lab Principal Researcher Arianne Hinds, is that the displays for immersive technology in the future will be much different from the flat screens or VR headsets of today. For example, light-field technology allows people to view holographic images without the use of 3D goggles. Hinds explained that any immersive technology standards need to be able to keep up with future leaps in technology.

One standard that Hinds feels holds potential is the Immersive Digital Experiences Alliance’s Immersive Technology Media Format. She feels MPEG will remain the standard for distribution and compression.

For years, Tencent Media Lab has been dedicated to research on multimedia technologies that have been used to help the cultural industry generate novel digital products.

In January, Tencent and the Palace Museum, also known as the Forbidden City, launched a popular real-time livestream. The livestream adopted the lab’s VR360 immersive technology – combined with the company’s cloud technology for stitching, transmission, decoding and rendering – to offer a fully immersive view of the ancient palace in the heart of Beijing during a tranquil winter snowfall.

With the advent of the 5G era, the Internet can provide users with superior data bandwidth and ultra low latency, which makes more applications within range and the interconnection of everything possible.

Tencent will continue to actively invest in multimedia technology R&D and provide effective services and support for developers and partners, Liu said.
