It\u00a0is\u00a0not\u00a0a prediction of\u00a0losses in 2026 or in any other individual year; rather, it\u00a0serves as\u00a0a benchmark insurers can\u00a0use to\u00a0evaluate potential losses\u00a0across a wide range of events,\u00a0perils\u00a0and regions.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">Several\u00a0additional\u00a0insights\u00a0help put the\u00a0number\u00a0into context:\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>\n          <b>The<\/b><br \/>\n          <b>\u00a0United States<\/b><br \/>\n          <b>\u00a0<\/b><br \/>\n          <b>accounts for\u00a0<\/b><br \/>\n          <b>the majority of<\/b><br \/>\n          <b>\u00a0<\/b><br \/>\n          <b>modeled insured catastrophe risk.<\/b>\u00a0Of the\u00a0$171 billion\u00a0global insured AAL, $117\u00a0billion\u00a0(68\u00a0percent)\u00a0is attributed to\u00a0the U.S.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>\n          <b>Severe thunderstorm<\/b><br \/>\n          <b>\u00a0accounts for 40 percent of modeled insured catastrophe risk, more than any other peril<\/b><br \/>\n          <b>.<\/b>\u00a0It\u00a0remains\u00a0the largest contributor to Verisk&#8217;s global insured AAL, ahead of tropical cyclone (27 percent), earthquake (10 percent), winter storm (9 percent), flood (7 percent)\u00a0and wildfire (6 percent). The pattern held in 2025, when frequency perils, rather than a single hurricane, drove industry losses.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>\n          <b>A severe catastrophe year could generate losses\u00a0<\/b><br \/>\n          <b>nearly three<\/b><br \/>\n          <b>\u00a0times higher than the global insured AAL.<\/b>\u00a0The report also examines increasingly severe\u00a0but plausible\u00a0loss scenarios:\u00a0At the 100-year return period \u2013 commonly used in the industry to describe a scenario with a 1 percent annual likelihood \u2013 modeled\u00a0aggregate\u00a0insured losses reach\u00a0$477 billion. At the 250-year return period, losses reach\u00a0$606 billion.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p align=\"left\">Since Verisk first published\u00a0this\u00a0report in 2012, the estimated global insured AAL has\u00a0nearly tripled, rising\u00a0from\u00a0$59 billion\u00a0to\u00a0$171 billion. The original 2012 figure was expressed in 2012 dollars.\u00a0The change also reflects\u00a0Verisk\u2019s investment in\u00a0expanding\u00a0model coverage\u00a0to\u00a0more than 20\u00a0additional\u00a0countries and regions, advances in science, data and modeling methods, updates to Verisk\u2019s view of risk,\u00a0and\u00a0growth\u00a0in insured exposure.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">\n        <b>What&#8217;s Driving Higher Losses Beyond the Hazard<\/b>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">Catastrophe losses are shaped by more than the number or severity of storms, wildfires or earthquakes in a given year. Several long-term trends continue to increase the value of property at risk and the potential cost of future catastrophes:\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>\n          <b>There is more property to\u00a0<\/b><br \/>\n          <b>insure<\/b><br \/>\n          <b>.<\/b>\u00a0Property exposure in the\u00a0countries\u00a0Verisk models has grown\u00a0roughly 7 percent\u00a0annually since 2021, driven by both new construction and rising asset values.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>\n          <b>The cost of rebuilding keeps increasing.<\/b>\u00a0In the United States, residential reconstruction costs have risen about 5 percent annually since 2021, outpacing consumer inflation and increasing the potential cost of catastrophe losses even when hazard activity\u00a0remains\u00a0unchanged.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>\n          <b>More people and property are concentrated in hazard-prone areas.<\/b>\u00a0Population growth continues to be concentrated in catastrophe-exposed regions, while development expands in flood plains, wildfire\u00a0zones\u00a0and other high-risk locations.\u00a0In England, for example, 7.1 percent of single-family homes already sit in the 100-year flood plain, and one in nine new homes built between 2022 and 2024 was built in a flood-risk area \u2014 a share Verisk\u2019s models project could rise to one in seven new homes by 2050.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p align=\"left\">Together, these trends increase insured catastrophe losses independently of weather patterns and help explain why the industry&#8217;s risk benchmark continues to rise.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">What would that mean in practice? Verisk&#8217;s models show that adding a significant U.S. landfalling hurricane to a year like 2025 could push annual insured catastrophe losses to\u00a0roughly\u00a0$200 billion. Industry reports\u00a0indicate\u00a0that total insured losses for 2025\u00a0ranged from\u00a0$107-$129 billion. The figure reflects an aggregate total across all perils in a single year, not a single\u00a0mega-event. Verisk&#8217;s report treats that figure as a foreseeable scenario the industry should be prepared to withstand, not a tail risk to revisit only after it happens. For consumers, a year\u00a0with\u00a0increased significant natural catastrophe\u00a0events could\u00a0mean increased\u00a0premiums, changes to underwriting terms, and in the hardest-hit areas, less available coverage in\u00a0subsequent\u00a0years.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">\n        <b>Why a quiet hurricane season is not a quiet year<\/b>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">Verisk&#8217;s report\u00a0underscores\u00a0that a year without a\u00a0U.S.\u00a0landfalling hurricane can lull the market toward thinner pricing and looser underwriting terms, precisely when discipline matters most. Down years, the report notes, are when catastrophe models\u00a0help insurers separate resilience from volatility\u00a0when the market eventually turns.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">\u201cThe\u00a0$171 billion\u00a0figure is not determined by the outcome of one hurricane season or one year of catastrophe losses,\u201d said Dr. Jay Guin, executive vice president and chief research officer\u00a0of\u00a0Verisk\u00a0Catastrophe and Risk Solutions.\u00a0\u201cIt reflects a wide distribution of potential events across perils and regions, using current exposure data and a view of hazard grounded in the near-present climate. That broader perspective helps the industry prepare for loss scenarios that historical experience alone may not reveal.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">\n        <b>A persistent global protection gap<\/b>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">The report also quantifies a persistent and uneven protection gap. Globally, only about 38 percent of economic losses from natural catastrophes are insured, corresponding to a modeled economic AAL of more than\u00a0$450 billion. In Europe, the gap is wider than the global average: of the region&#8217;s\u00a0$110 billion\u00a0in expected annual economic catastrophe\u00a0losses,\u00a0only about $24 billion\u00a0(22 percent)\u00a0is currently insured. In July 2025, flash floods in Central Texas, the deadliest flood event in\u00a0nearly five\u00a0decades, occurred in a region where the national flood insurance take-up rate is about 3 percent, and take-up in the hardest-hit county was about 2.5 percent.
