The disease can present in several forms, including cutaneous leishmaniasis, which commonly causes skin sores; mucosal leishmaniasis, which can affect the nose, mouth, or throat; and visceral leishmaniasis, the most severe form, which affects internal organs and can be life threatening if untreated.
