\nRoblox Corporation (NYSE: RBLX) today announced the rollout of real-time chat rephrasing, a new AI-powered feature designed to keep gameplay fluid while maintaining civility within chat. Roblox is also significantly enhancing its core text filters for communication on the platform to improve detections of violative messages or attempts to bypass Community Standards.<\/p>\n

Real-Time Chat Rephrasing for Respectful Chat<\/b><\/p>\n

\nEvery day, millions of people connect and play on Roblox where real-time communication is important for user expression and coordinating gameplay. When users encounter strings of \u201c####\u201d because filters have blocked inappropriate language, chats can be disrupted and hard to follow.<\/p>\n

\nTo keep gameplay chat flowing naturally for users, Roblox isleveraging AI to automatically rephrase profanity. Rather than displaying only hashmarks, filtered text will be translated into more respectful language that remains closer to the user\u2019s original intent. For example, a message that violates Roblox\u2019s profanity policies, such as \u201cHurry TF up!\u201d would previously have appeared as \u201c####\u201d within experience chat. That will now be rephrased to \u201cHurry up!\u201d This new layer is designed to maintain civility by rephrasing the language and replacing \u201cstop signs\u201d with real-time guidance.<\/p>\n

\n\u201cChat is central to how people connect, coordinate, and play on Roblox,\u201d said Rajiv Bhatia, Vice President of User and Discovery Product at Roblox. \u201cReal-time rephrasing helps keep gameplay and conversations on track while guiding language toward what\u2019s appropriate. This approach reduces friction in chat while maintaining the standards that help keep our community civil.\u201d<\/p>\n

\nWhen a message violates Roblox\u2019s profanity policy, everyone in the chat is notified that the text has been rephrased to keep things civil. While rephrasing reduces some of the disruption in the chat, Roblox\u2019s multilayered safety system remains in effect for more serious behavior. Rephrasing is available exclusively for in-experience chat between age-checked users in similar age groups and is supported in all languages currently available through Roblox\u2019s automatic translation tools.<\/p>\n

\nAs Roblox developed this feature, the company consulted with its Teen Council<\/a> members to build a system that reflects how teens actually chat. Council member Sofia said, \u201cMoving toward real-time rephrasing preserves the flow of conversation while still helping keep everyone safe. It gently guides the interaction back on track and helps people feel welcome.\u201d<\/p>\n

\nIn May 2025, Roblox introduced proactive, real-time warnings to help users understand Roblox\u2019s policies and to prompt them to reconsider their language next time. In experiments last year, Roblox saw that issuing in-experience text chat notifications and time-outs resulted in a 5% reduction in filtered chat messages and a 6% reduction in consequences from abuse reports.<\/p>\n

Enhancing Chat Filters<\/b><\/p>\n

\nRoblox is also making significant improvements to its text filtering system. Roblox is upgrading its text filter to detect more variations of language that breaks its Community Standards. Early results from Roblox\u2019s testing show significant improvements in detecting leet-speak, or letters replaced with numbers or symbols, and more sophisticated attempts to bypass filters. This has allowed Roblox to reduce the prevalence of false negatives for sharing or soliciting personal information, like social handles or phone numbers, by 20x.<\/p>\n

\nNo system is perfect, but these advancements represent a major milestone in supporting safe, civil, and fun communication on Roblox. This is the first step on Roblox’s long-term path to reducing ##### for a more natural chat experience. The company will continue to learn, iterate, and evolve its tools to help support safe and civil chat, including additional controls for users.<\/p>\n
