(NYSE: PFE), manufacturer of contraceptive injection Depo-Provera (DMPA), is facing a Multidistrict Litigation (MDL No. 3140) in the USA being brought on behalf of women who developed an intracranial meningioma, a type of brain tumour, after using Pfizer\u2019s Depo-Provera.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n2,132 women in the US have filed lawsuits against Pfizer, representing a fivefold increase since May.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\nA link between Depo-Provera and a type of brain tumour was found in peer-reviewed studies, and lawsuits allege that Pfizer did not warn about this risk.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\nThis litigation followed a study by EPI-PHARE (Roland et al.) published in March 2024 in the <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/cts.businesswire.com\/ct\/CT?id=smartlink&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.bmj.com%2Fcontent%2F384%2Fbmj-2023-078078&amp;esheet=54390104&amp;newsitemid=20260107690108&amp;lan=en-US&amp;anchor=British+Medical+Journal&amp;index=1&amp;md5=62a635abfcdbc92b2bf83d3a2a9d28b9\"><i>British Medical Journal<\/i><\/a>, which found that women who had used the Pfizer contraceptive injection Depo-Provera<sup>1<\/sup> for more than one year were 5.6 times more likely to develop an intracranial meningioma.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\nAn estimated 74 million women globally receive Depo-Provera injections according to a 2019 UN study<sup>2<\/sup>. Also, according to the UN, 247 million worldwide are on hormonal contraceptives<sup>34<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\nThe FDA approved a warning label change in December for Pfizer\u2019s contraceptive injection Depo-Provera, adding a brain tumour warning.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>PENSACOLA, Fla.&#8211;(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.businesswire.com\">BUSINESS WIRE<\/a>)&#8211;<br \/>\nAt a Case Management Conference in the Multi District Litigation against Pfizer Inc. (NYSE:PFE), the Honorable M. Casey Rodgers set a date for the first Trial, which will take place in December 2026, as more than 2,100 women pursue litigation alleging Pfizer failed to adequately warn patients despite long-standing knowledge of the risk.<\/p>\n<p>\nThe hearing took place within days of the The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approving a label change to Pfizer\u2019s contraceptive injection Depo-Provera, adding a warning about the risk of intracranial meningioma, a type of brain tumour.<\/p>\n<p>\nThese cases have been filed across the Depo-Provera Multidistrict Litigation and the New York and Delaware Litigations against Pfizer.
