The local utilities will then send a crew to mark underground lines in the area (electric, natural gas, water, sewer, phone, cable TV and others) with stakes, flags or paint.<\/p>\n<p>\n        <b>Damage data by the numbers:<\/b>\n      <\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>From January to <span class=\"xn-chron\">June 2025<\/span>, Duke Energy reported damage to more than 5,000 electric and natural gas lines in their service territories (<span class=\"xn-location\">North Carolina<\/span>, <span class=\"xn-location\">South Carolina<\/span>, <span class=\"xn-location\">Florida<\/span>, <span class=\"xn-location\">Ohio<\/span>, <span class=\"xn-location\">Kentucky<\/span>, <span class=\"xn-location\">Tennessee<\/span> and <span class=\"xn-location\">Indiana<\/span>).<\/li>\n<li>More specifically, Duke Energy reported about 290 damages to underground natural gas facilities and 89 damages to its underground electric network in <span class=\"xn-location\">Ohio<\/span> and <span class=\"xn-location\">Kentucky<\/span>.<\/li>\n<li>In 2024, Duke Energy reported more than 8,870 damages to natural gas and electric lines.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\n        <b>Our view<\/b>\n      <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Whether you&#8217;re finishing a summer yard project or starting something new this fall, call 811 before you dig,&#8221; said <span class=\"xn-person\">Amy Spiller<\/span>, president of Duke Energy Ohio\/<span class=\"xn-location\">Kentucky<\/span>. &#8220;Damaging a utility line can be dangerous and costly, but it&#8217;s easily prevented by this simple step.
