OTTAWA, Nov. 24, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — In early 2022, TIRF partnered with Diageo North America<\/a> to establish the\u00a0Impaired Driving Coalition of Canada <\/strong>(IDCC) and develop a National Action Plan aimed at preventing impaired driving. The IDCC combines the knowledge and expertise of diverse member organizations and innovative educational resources to guide the development of the national action plan containing prevention priorities. A critical objective for the IDCC is to increase public awareness and help drivers recognize the risks associated with driving after drinking.<\/p>\n

Cross-sector partners joining forces with TIRF and Diageo on the IDCC include Desjardins<\/a>, Safer Roads Alliance<\/a>, Saskatchewan Government Insurance<\/a> (SGI), Toronto Police Service<\/a>, Ottawa Police Service<\/a>, Ontario Provincial Police<\/a>, North Bay Police Service<\/a>, Victoria Police Department<\/a> (VicPD), Manitoba Public Insurance<\/a>, Canadian Automobile Association<\/a> (CAA), Windsor Regional Hospital<\/a>, Ford Canada<\/a>, Private Motor Truck Council<\/a>, Canadian Wireless & Telecommunications Association<\/a>, Spirits Canada<\/a>, Canada Safety Council<\/a>, Beer Canada<\/a>, arrive alive DRIVE SOBER<\/a>, Alcohol Countermeasures Systems<\/a>, CARSP Young Professionals\u2019 Committee<\/a>, and the Ontario Injury Prevention Practitioners Network as well as TIRF\u2019s Lead Youth Advisor.<\/p>\n

\u201cDuring the past two decades, the number of Canadians killed in road crashes involving a drinking driver has generally declined,\u201d shares Robyn Robertson, TIRF President & CEO. \u201cHowever, in 2019 there were still 470 people killed in a crash where at least one driver was drinking. This represents one in four road deaths, and self-report data from 2021 suggests numbers are trending in the wrong direction.\u201d1<\/em><\/sup><\/p>\n

Although, the percentage of drivers who self-reported driving within two hours of drinking has decreased since 2009, in the past three years the percentage of drivers admitting to drinking any amount of alcohol before driving has increased. More concerning, the percentage of drivers who self-reported driving when they thought they were over the legal limit in the past 12 months has increased since 2018, with almost one in 10 drivers (9.7%) reported doing this in 2021.2<\/sup><\/p>\n

\u201cThe IDCC\u2019s National Action Plan is designed to help people understand risks based on the latest data and risk research and to customize messaging for different audiences and ages. A main objective is to increase awareness using IDCC tools, to leverage resources from partners, and to empower people to speak up about safe choices,\u201d shares Robertson. \u201cAdditionally, the IDCC will explore opportunities to strengthen and share data as well as explore the benefits of new technologies.\u201d<\/p>\n
