While minorities account for over 48 percent of the U.S. renter population, according to the U.S. Census, just four percent of real estate companies are owned by women or minorities. According to a study by Harvard University<\/span>, minority-owned companies control only a little over 1.2 percent of all assets under management (AUM). To bridge this gap, Walker & Dunlop has launched CREUnited \u2013 <\/i>an alliance amongst industry heavyweights and minority-owned businesses \u2013 <\/i>dedicated\u00a0to increasing minority representation and AUM. <\/p>\n

With member companies such as Fannie Mae<\/a>, Freddie Mac<\/a>, Camber Creek<\/a>, Greystar<\/a>, Kayne Anderson Real Estate<\/a>, KKR<\/a>, Pacific Life<\/a>, Symetra<\/a>, Manulife Investment Management<\/a>, and Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield<\/a>, the partnership covers all aspects of the industry, including lenders and private equity firms, institutional investors, and owners and operators of all asset classes.<\/p>\n

Earlier this year, the alliance hosted a listening session with executives from 11 leading minority-owned CRE firms to commence the initiative. Leaders from Banneker Ventures<\/a>, Dantes Partners<\/a>, FLGA<\/a>, Gateway Merchant Banking<\/a>, Mohanna Development<\/a>, New Faze Development<\/a>, Osso Capital<\/a>, Rule Enterprises<\/a>, Standard Real Estate Investments<\/a>, LA Bolden<\/a>, and The Menkiti Group<\/a> shared their personal stories and perspectives to help further illustrate the challenges and obstacles ingrained in the industry.<\/p>\n

Stemming from the discussion, CREUnited<\/i> identified five objectives and developed prospective solutions for each. Collectively, these provide a blueprint for measurable progress:<\/p>\n

  2. \n Build new channels for minorities to access established professional networks <\/b>\n <\/li>\n

  4. \n Assist in expanding the portfolios of minority owners beyond affordable housing to market-rate multifamily and other asset classes, such as retail, office, industrial, and hospitality<\/b>\n <\/li>\n
  5. \n Implement best practices to ensure capital flows from institutional investors to minority owned firms<\/b>\n <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
