The year-over-year increase in R&amp;D was driven primarily by start-up costs associated with the Phase 3 studies of mitapivat in thalassemia and sickle cell disease.<\/p>\n<p>\n        <strong>Selling, General and Administrative (SG&amp;A) Expenses:\u00a0<\/strong>SG&amp;A expenses for continuing operations were\u00a0$33.6 million\u00a0for the first quarter of 2021 compared to\u00a0$31.7 million\u00a0for the first quarter of 2020.
