New York, NY, April 07, 2021 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — As climate change continues to\u00a0make\u00a0headlines,\u00a0Rising Tide: Visualizing the Human Costs of\u00a0<\/strong>the\u00a0<\/strong>Climate\u00a0<\/strong>Crisis<\/strong>,\u00a0a new exhibition at\u00a0Museum of the City of New York<\/strong>, features\u00a0works\u00a0by Dutch photographer\u202fKadir<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong>van\u202f<\/strong>Lohuizen<\/strong>\u202fthat illustrate\u00a0the\u00a0dramatic effects\u00a0of rising sea levels.\u00a0Opening on April 16, 2021– in advance of the 51st\u00a0anniversary of Earth Day — the exhibition presents documentary photographs, videos,\u00a0and drone images that shed light on rising sea levels in New York City and across the world, unveiling a staggering image\u00a0of\u00a0their\u00a0effect\u00a0on people globally.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith major weather events like Superstorm Sandy, we came to truly understand, first-hand, the dramatic impact of rising sea levels,\u201d said\u00a0Whitney Donhauser<\/strong>, Ronay\u00a0<\/strong>Menschel<\/strong>\u00a0Director and President of the Museum of the City of New York<\/strong>. \u201cRising Tide\u00a0provides vivid visual documentation of how climate change is\u202falready affecting so many people, including New Yorkers. Kadir van\u00a0Lohuizen\u2019s\u00a0powerful work offers a stark investigation of the deepening crisis.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

For many years,\u00a0van\u00a0Lohuizen\u00a0has documented humanity’s complex relationship with\u202fnature. In 1997, he began a long-term project investigating life\u202falong\u202fseven rivers of the world, traveling their full length from\u202fsource\u202fto mouth. Other subjects range from the impact of the\u202fdiamond\u202findustry in Africa to the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina\u202falong\u202fthe Gulf Coast.\u00a0In\u00a0Rising Tide,\u00a0the photographer\u00a0has captured the\u202feffects\u202fof rising sea levels in nearly a dozen countries around\u202fthe\u202fworld, documenting\u00a0the\u00a0reality\u00a0of the\u00a0climate\u00a0crisis\u00a0in a narrative manner that portrays multiple perspectives, including landscapes in Greenland, Bangladesh, Papua-New Guinea, Kiribati, Fiji, Amsterdam, Panama, Miami, and New York City.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Van\u00a0Lohuizen\u00a0has had a longstanding relationship with water, even before becoming a professional photographer: besides his hands-on experience in the shipping industry, van\u00a0Lohuizen\u00a0has been living on a sailing vessel in the center of Amsterdam for 25 years. He also spends a long time in the areas where he works,\u00a0a practice\u00a0that\u00a0allows\u00a0him to come into close contact with the local population and capture unguarded moments. His personal involvement with the subject matter infuses his photographs with both an intense expressiveness and his own direct concerns about climate change.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cRising Tide\u00a0shows people who live in\u202fthese\u202faffected areas, but also those who have already moved to safer ground,\u201d\u00a0says\u00a0van\u00a0Lohuizen. \u201cThe exhibition\u202falso considers what can be done to prevent great\u202floss of land\u202fand\u202fasks if we are doing enough with the knowledge we have. I hope that\u00a0Rising Tide\u00a0will contribute to a\u00a0better understanding of what is\u202falready\u202fhappening today and will make us realize that there is no time to waste.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

This exhibition is a collaboration between the Museum of the City of New York<\/strong>, The National Maritime Museum\u202fAmsterdam,\u202fthe Netherlands<\/strong>, and NOOR<\/strong>.\u202fThis presentation is based on the exhibition of the same title that\u202fopened\u202fin October 2019 at Het\u202f<\/strong>Scheepvaartmuseum<\/strong>, the Dutch\u202fNational Maritime Museum<\/strong>.\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n

Dutch documentary photographer\u00a0Kadir van\u00a0Lohuizen\u00a0sits down for a virtual conversation about the local and global impacts of the climate crisis with fellow Dutchman and climate change expert\u00a0Henk\u00a0Ovink\u00a0and Bangladeshi environmental activist\u00a0Sharif Jamil.\u00a0Moderated by\u00a0Anne Barnard\u00a0of\u00a0The New York Times.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
