According to data from the International Capital Market Association (ICMA), the <span class=\"xn-location\">City of Toronto<\/span> was only the third local government globally to issue a Social Bond in accordance with the ICMA Social Bond Principles.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The City of Toronto Social Bond, issued under <span class=\"xn-location\">Toronto&#8217;s<\/span> Social Debenture Framework, is part of a program to promote positive socioeconomic outcomes, from affordable housing and access to essential infrastructure and services, to socioeconomic advancement and empowerment.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re pleased about the recognition the City of Toronto Social Bond has received from Environmental Finance,&#8221; said <span class=\"xn-person\">Jonathan Hackett<\/span>, Head, BMO Sustainable Finance. &#8220;Government Social Bond issuances are an emerging and increasingly important area of sustainable financing and BMO is excited to be a leader in this growing space &#8212; one that so closely aligns with our Purpose to grow the good.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The pandemic has put pre-existing systemic socio-economic inequalities and poverty into the spotlight. We need to address these issues at the forefront of our thinking,&#8221; said\u00a0Heather Taylor, Chief Financial Officer and Treasurer, <span class=\"xn-location\">City of Toronto<\/span>. &#8220;The <span class=\"xn-location\">City of Toronto&#8217;s<\/span><span class=\"xn-money\">$100 million<\/span> social bond proceeds have helped fund critical strategic initiatives that include shelters and affordable housing.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The <span class=\"xn-money\">$100 million<\/span> bond issue, with a 10-year maturity, will mature on <span class=\"xn-chron\">December 2<\/span>, 2030.\u00a0 Investors paid a price of <span class=\"xn-money\">$99.98<\/span> to yield 1.602 per cent, which is the lowest borrowing cost the <span class=\"xn-location\">City of Toronto<\/span> has ever secured. The proceeds from this issuance will be used to help fund Shelter, Support and Housing Administration&#8217;s <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/c212.net\/c\/link\/?t=0&amp;l=en&amp;o=3116015-1&amp;h=3290017732&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.toronto.ca%2Fcity-government%2Faccountability-operations-customer-service%2Flong-term-vision-plans-and-strategies%2Fgeorge-street-revitalization%2F&amp;a=George+Street+Revitalization\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">George Street Revitalization<\/a>\u00a0and 1,000 New Shelter Beds projects.
