Arlington, VA, March 15, 2021 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — The U.S.\u00a0Department of Labor (DoL) has approved the creation of a modern apprenticeship program for prospective biomedical equipment technicians (BMET). The new program, launched by the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI), replaces a decades-old curriculum, and offers \u201cfresh off-the-street\u201d apprentices on-the-job training.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThe program is an open door, offering a great career with no student debt,\u201d said Maggie Berkey, CBET, a senior BMET for Common Spirit Health and a member of AAMI\u2019s Technology Management Council. \u201cSuccess will be seeing more positions getting filled more quickly, and not just by warm bodies, but by people ready to do the job safely and effectively!\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

The backbone of hospitals and even laboratories, BMETs routinely\u00a0service\u00a0the medical devices that are needed to monitor patient health or record important data. When networked medical devices fail to communicate with one another, it is up to well-trained professionals to figure out what went wrong. And in a hospital setting, crucial device repairs often cannot wait for the manufacturer to send a technician.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Of course,\u00a0experienced BMETs are in high demand.\u00a0The\u00a0U.S.\u202fBureau of Labor Statistics projects<\/a>\u00a0that\u202fnearly 3,000\u00a0new\u00a0BMET\u00a0positions\u00a0will be created by 2029, with an above-average growth rate of five percent for the field.\u202fWhat\u00a0worries\u00a0managers is that\u202fnearly half\u00a0of the current\u00a0healthcare technology management (HTM)\u00a0workforce\u00a0is over the age of 50.\u202f\u00a0As more BMETs retire and the number of college programs to\u202ftrain\u202fnew HTM professionals dwindles,\u00a0the demand for new hires will only increase.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cAcross the U.S., we\u2019re seeing job openings for BMETs not getting filled for eight or nine months at a time, and colleges are being forced to drop their BMET programs due to budgetary constraints,\u201d said Danielle\u00a0McGeary, AAMI\u2019s vice president of\u00a0HTM. \u201cThis only serves to widen a training gap between the county\u2019s most senior and soon to be retiring BMETs and the next generation of HTM professionals.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

The new BMET Apprenticeship program, co-designed by\u00a0McGeary\u00a0and Berkey, is a step towards closing that gap.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThe idea is to take individuals practically right off the street, near wherever positions need filling, and train them on the job. They learn from other BMETs with 20 or 30 years of experience while getting valuable hands-on experience, and by the time they\u2019re done training, they\u2019re ready to go on call,\u201d said Berkey. \u201cThey already know the policies and safety procedures of the facility they worked at. They know the equipment and customers, and they\u2019ve had those critical interactions that you can\u2019t train for with a textbook!\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

The new\u00a0AAMI\u00a0program replaces a four-year BMET\u00a0program\u00a0that was established in the 1990s.\u00a0The modernized\u00a0program\u00a0boasts a shorter term, with\u00a0of 4,000 to 6,000 hours of paid, on-the-job training in safety, electronics, anatomy, information technology, and more. Apprentices will study and\u00a0acquire\u00a0AAMI\u2019s premiere CABT certification<\/a>\u00a0for professionals entering the BMET field, a certification in\u00a0IT Fundamentals<\/a>, and finally become a\u00a0Certified Biomedical Equipment Technician<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWith the certification being built right in, you know that this person has at least this minimum knowledge base, that they’re teachable, and they have a broad understanding of what their job is and what their responsibilities are,\u201d Berkey added. \u201cIt sets a bar of excellence for our industry, and that’s what we all want!\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

For trainees that already have some of the required training completed, an employer can fast track the apprenticeship. Program graduates earn a certificate from AAMI and the\u00a0DoL, asserting that their training meets a national standard of excellence.\u00a0Employers cover the expense of training and certification with\u00a0support from the\u00a0DoL<\/a>.\u00a0In\u00a0turn, participating organizations are offered state tax credits for taking on apprentices.\u00a0The\u00a0National Apprenticeship Act of 2021<\/a>, recently passed by the U.S. House of Representatives, may also provide support as soon as early 2022.<\/p>\n
