Yet the past year has shone a spotlight on the challenges of raising children while balancing many other priorities. Understanding the decisions made by parents and caregivers\u2014and the hurdles they face while trying to provide food for their children\u2014provides valuable information for improving the dietary habits of children nationwide.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A new survey by the International Food Information Council\u00a0(IFIC), \u201cKnowledge, Understanding and Behaviors When Feeding Young Children,\u201d\u00a0examines\u00a0how parents and caregivers consider current diet recommendations\u00a0for kids ages\u00a02 to 10, how they\u00a0interpret\u00a0and implement nutrition advice,\u00a0and what information sources\u00a0adults\u00a0rely on when making food and dietary choices for children.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>While parents and caregivers report having good access to nutrition information\u00a0and overall feel confident that\u00a0they\u2019re\u00a0meeting their child\u2019s nutritional needs, many cite obstacles,\u00a0such as how to introduce variety into kids\u2019 diets\u00a0and how to translate aspirations into positive behaviors.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a parent\u00a0myself, the\u00a0contrast\u00a0between\u00a0knowing\u00a0what\u00a0a healthful diet looks like\u00a0and actually getting\u00a0a\u00a0child to eat\u00a0nutritiously is extremely relatable,\u201d\u00a0said\u00a0Ali Webster, IFIC\u2019s\u00a0director of research and nutrition communications. \u201cWe all want to provide the best we can for our kids, and\u00a0this research\u00a0highlights\u00a0that when it comes to nutrition, the decisions parents and caregivers make\u00a0around their\u00a0children\u2019s\u00a0diets\u00a0aren\u2019t always straightforward\u00a0\u2013 everything from\u00a0taste, price and nutrition\u00a0to personal\u00a0and cultural\u00a0preferences\u00a0need to be considered.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n        <strong>Eating Habits of Young Children<\/strong><br \/>\n        <strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n      <\/p>\n<p>When asked about\u00a0the\u00a0consumption of\u00a0different types of foods,\u00a0two\u00a0in three respondents (69%) said\u00a0their children eat dairy products two\u00a0or more times a day, while\u00a074%\u00a0and 63%\u00a0said\u00a0their kids eat\u00a0protein\u00a0and fruit\u00a0two\u00a0or more\u00a0times per day, respectively.\u00a0Just one in five (19%) said\u00a0their child eats\u00a0grains at least three times a day.\u00a0While 91% said that their children eat vegetables at least once per day, only one in five (19%) said they eat them 3 or more times daily.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, vegetables\u00a0emerged as the food that\u00a0parents\u00a0and caregivers have\u00a0the\u00a0most difficulty\u00a0in getting their child to eat, with 41% stating that dark green vegetables\u00a0are a challenge\u00a0and\u00a0red and orange vegetables posing difficulties for 28%;\u00a0acceptance of\u00a0beans, peas and other legumes (39%) and seafood (35%)\u00a0are also common hurdles.\u00a0Children seem to be the least resistant to consuming dairy, fruit and whole grains.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In alignment with these challenges, broadening kids\u2019 palates is a big priority for parents and caregivers: two out of five (42%) said\u00a0they wish they could improve their child\u2019s willingness to try new foods and 37% want to increase both the variety of foods and the\u00a0amount\u00a0of vegetables children consume. However, they cite major obstacles, including the pickiness of their child (39%), the cost of healthy foods (30%) and the taste of healthy foods (23%).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The vast majority of\u00a0parents and caregivers (88%) report limiting or avoiding sugar in their children\u2019s diets, but an almost identical amount (90%) say their child eats sweets at least once a day, nearly three in four (74%) say their child regularly drinks juice and 25% say their child\u00a0often drinks\u00a0regular soda, highlighting examples where nutritional realities might be falling short of aspirations.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Respondents\u2019 efforts to raise children with healthy diets\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0stop at the foods they eat or don\u2019t eat. Most kids\u00a0consume at least one form of dietary supplement, with 63% currently taking a multivitamin, 43% taking a single vitamin or mineral supplement, and 32% consuming nutrition supplement drinks.\u00a0Of parents and caregivers who give dietary supplements to their children, over three in four (77%) consider them to be\u00a0very or extremely important to their overall nutrition, with\u00a0the\u00a0most commonly chosen\u00a0reasons for consuming them being\u00a0importance\u00a0in\u00a0growth and development\u00a0(52%)\u00a0and to fill nutrition gaps\u00a0(51%).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n        <strong>Confidence, Satisfaction and Challenges in Providing Nutritious Diets for Children<\/strong><br \/>\n        <strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n      <\/p>\n<p>More than two-thirds of\u00a0parents\u00a0and\u00a0caregivers\u00a0(68%)\u00a0are\u00a0very or extremely\u00a0confident that their child is getting the nutrition they need for growth and development.\u00a0When parents and caregivers make food choices for their kids, growth and development is the top consideration (59% of respondents\u00a0ranked in their top three), followed by kids\u2019 immune systems (41%),\u00a0their\u00a0digestive health (23%)\u00a0and reducing risk of developing health conditions later in life (23%).\u00a0A large majority of\u00a0respondents\u00a0is\u00a0very or extremely confident that their child\u2019s diet meets\u00a0the\u00a0needs for these\u00a0top priorities.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>More than two-thirds (69%) of\u00a0parents\u00a0and\u00a0caregivers say\u00a0they\u2019re\u00a0extremely or very satisfied with the amount of information and guidance available regarding healthy eating and nutrition for children,\u00a0and 85% feel they know enough to make informed decisions about their child\u2019s diet.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>However,\u00a0for many parents and caregivers,\u00a0staying up to speed on their child\u2019s nutrition remains a challenge:\u00a0nearly two out of five\u00a0(38%)\u00a0said they find it hard to keep track of their child\u2019s nutritional needs, and of these,\u00a083% said they could make better choices for their children if it were easier\u00a0to understand the needs of their child.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n        <strong>Influential<\/strong><br \/>\n        <strong>\u00a0Sources of Information<\/strong><br \/>\n        <strong>\u00a0for Parents and Caregivers<\/strong><br \/>\n        <strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n      <\/p>\n<p>Medical professionals are far and away the most influential source of\u00a0information about nutrition for\u00a0parents and caregivers (the top choice of 35%), followed by their own parents or in-laws (7%), guidelines from nutrition or pediatric associations (7%), and nutritionists\u00a0working for the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC)\u00a0(6%). (About one in five respondents, or 22%, reported taking part in the\u00a0Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)\u00a0and 9% said they receive WIC benefits.)\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Parents and caregivers are largely aware of federal dietary guidance, with half\u00a0(51%)\u00a0saying\u00a0they know at least a fair amount about the\u00a0Dietary Guidelines for Americans\u00a0and 69% knowing at least a fair amount about MyPlate. SNAP and WIC recipients are more likely than those who\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0receive food assistance to say they know a lot about MyPlate (39% vs. 31%). In addition, nearly two-thirds (64%) of all respondents say they look at Nutrition Facts labels often or always, and 62% say the same about ingredients lists.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Nonetheless, the\u00a02020-2025 Dietary Guidelines for Americans\u00a0highlight that children often fall short on\u00a0recommended intakes of fruits,\u00a0vegetables\u00a0and whole grains and that they get too many calories from\u00a0added sugars, saturated fat and sodium, a reminder that\u00a0translation of knowledge into practice is\u00a0difficult, especially when facing the\u00a0hurdles of feeding young children.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n        <strong>Impact of COVID-19 on Kids\u2019 Diets<\/strong><br \/>\n        <strong>, One Year\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\n        <strong>Into<\/strong><br \/>\n        <strong>\u00a0the Pandemic<\/strong><br \/>\n        <strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n      <\/p>\n<p>Like\u00a0many other\u00a0recent\u00a0IFIC reports, the\u00a0survey looked at\u00a0some of\u00a0the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic\u2014which, according to respondents, are fairly modest\u00a0when it comes to\u00a0children\u2019s diets.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>More than half (57%) of parents and caregivers say their children\u2019s nutrition has not changed during the pandemic, while 31% say it improved at least somewhat. Of those with kids whose nutrition improved, 16% credited\u00a0healthier foods, 15% pointed\u00a0to homemade meals, and 15% cited\u00a0better monitoring of food intake and options.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>However, the pandemic\u2019s negative impacts on\u00a0nutrition\u00a0were noted for\u00a0over one in 10 children (11%)\u00a0whose\u00a0nutrition has gotten worse since the start of the pandemic.\u00a0Of this subset, 23%\u00a0of parents and caregivers\u00a0blamed\u00a0changes to snacking habits,\u00a022%\u00a0said\u00a0it\u00a0was\u00a0due to\u00a0a\u00a0limited variety of food\u00a0or\u00a0access to fresh food\u00a0and 21% blamed\u00a0food choices that\u00a0were unhealthy or convenient.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The COVID-19 pandemic has also resulted in clear shifts\u00a0in\u00a0the way parents and caregivers\u00a0buy and prepare foods for their children. Cooking more at home was the largest change, with 54% saying they were\u00a0spending more time in the kitchen.\u00a0Other common changes were looking for foods with a longer\u00a0shelf life (27%),\u00a0buying foods to improve their child\u2019s immune function (25%) and doing less in-person grocery shopping for their child (22%). The economic effects felt by so many throughout the\u00a0past year\u00a0were also seen here: 17% said the pandemic has made it more difficult for them to afford the foods they would usually buy for their child.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n        <strong>Methodology<\/strong><br \/>\n        <strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n      <\/p>\n<p>Survey results were derived from online interviews of 1,199 U.S. adults, conducted December\u00a012, 2020,\u00a0to\u00a0January\u00a04, 2021, by\u00a0Dynata. Results were weighted to ensure proportional representation of the population, with a margin of error of \u00b13.1 points at the 95%\u00a0confidence level, based on the general population sample of n=1,000. An additional 199 interviews were conducted among adults who identified as Black, African American, Hispanic, Latino, or of Spanish descent to assure adequate number of respondents to support comparisons.
