CALGARY, Alberta, Feb. 23, 2021 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Saskatchewan remains Canada\u2019s most attractive jurisdiction for mining investment, finds the Annual Survey of Mining Companies<\/em><\/strong><\/a> released today by the Fraser Institute, an independent, non-partisan Canadian public policy think-tank.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Fraser Institute\u2019s mining survey is the most comprehensive report on government policies that either attract or discourage mining investors,\u201d said Elmira Aliakbari, director of the Fraser Institute\u2019s Centre for Natural Resource Studies and co-author of the report.<\/p>\n

This year\u2019s report ranks 77 jurisdictions around the world based on their geologic attractiveness (minerals and metals) and government policies that encourage or deter exploration and investment.<\/p>\n

Again, on the report\u2019s Overall Investment Attractiveness Index, Saskatchewan remains the top-rated Canadian jurisdiction (3rd<\/sup> up from 11th<\/sup> last year) followed by Quebec (6th<\/sup> up from 18th<\/sup>) and Newfoundland and Labrador (8th<\/sup> up from 28th<\/sup>).<\/p>\n

However, Quebec\u2019s strong performance in overall investment attractiveness is due largely to the province\u2019s mineral potential. On government policy alone, Quebec ranks 17th<\/sup>, which suggests there\u2019s plenty of room for improvement.<\/p>\n

British Columbia and Ontario (two large mining provinces) also perform poorly on the policy front due to investor concerns about disputed land claims and protected areas.<\/p>\n

\u201cA sound and predictable regulatory regime coupled with competitive fiscal policies help make a jurisdiction attractive in the eyes of mining investors,\u201d said Jairo Yunis, Fraser Institute policy analyst and report co-author.<\/p>\n

\u201cPolicymakers in every province and territory should understand that mineral deposits alone are not enough to attract precious investment dollars,\u201d Aliakbari said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
