Highlights from the report include:<\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>ETFs posted calendar-year record inflows of <span class=\"xn-money\">$502 billion<\/span>, with taxable-bond ETFs collecting the most of any category group at nearly <span class=\"xn-money\">$195 billion<\/span> in 2020. Meanwhile, mutual funds saw a record <span class=\"xn-money\">$289 billion<\/span> of outflows in 2020, yet their <span class=\"xn-money\">$18.2 trillion<\/span> of total assets at year&#8217;s end was more than three times the total assets of ETFs. <\/li>\n<li>Looking at category groups, U.S. equity funds&#8217; <span class=\"xn-money\">$241 billion<\/span> of outflows for the year was four times the previous record of <span class=\"xn-money\">$58 billion<\/span> set in 2015. Large-growth equity funds had <span class=\"xn-money\">$66 billion<\/span> of outflows in 2020, marking their 17th consecutive year of outflows. <\/li>\n<li>Taxable-bond funds collected <span class=\"xn-money\">$73 billion<\/span> of inflows in December and a record <span class=\"xn-money\">$441 billion<\/span> for the year. The Federal Reserve bought high-yield and corporate bond funds midyear to support the fixed-income market, and its actions helped both categories garner record inflows in 2020 of <span class=\"xn-money\">$54 billion<\/span> and <span class=\"xn-money\">$52 billion<\/span>, respectively. <\/li>\n<li>Commodities funds drew a record <span class=\"xn-money\">$37.6 billion<\/span> in 2020 as investors added gold and silver to their portfolios through ETFs such as SPDR Gold shares amid economic and social turmoil. <\/li>\n<li>Vanguard led all fund families in 2020 with nearly <span class=\"xn-money\">$141 billion<\/span> of inflows. Dimensional Fund Advisors saw the most outflows in 2020 at <span class=\"xn-money\">$37 billion<\/span>.
