Per-card spending remained relatively consistent when compared with previous years.<\/p>\n<p>Paytronix data shows that holiday sales \u2013 those that occurred during November and December \u2013 accounted for 45.8% of all\u00a0restaurant\u00a0gift card\u00a0sales in 2020, and approximately 48.6% of all gift card spend.\u00a0This is on\u00a0par with the previous three years, during which holiday card sales accounted for an average of\u00a046.3% of all annual gift card sales.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Despite a nearly one-third decline in overall card sales, the average dollar\u00a0amount loaded onto each card remained fairly consistent in 2020, indicating that\u00a0guests maintained their spending power. Fine Dining restaurants fared exceptionally well in this regard,\u00a0realizing a 7.7% increase\u00a0in the average spend per gift card over the course of the year.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Full Service Restaurants (FSRs), meanwhile, took the brunt of the losses in 2020.\u00a0FSRs\u2019 share of the market fell by more than 15% to account for just 26.3% of gift card sales across\u00a0restaurant sectors. The bulk of those sales were recouped by Quick Service Restaurants (QSRs),\u00a0which accounted for 66.5% of sales in 2020.\u00a0The remaining two\u00a0restaurant types \u2013 Fast Casual and Fine Dining \u2013 accounted for 4.5% and\u00a02.7% of annual gift card sales, respectively.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGuests\u00a0appear to have opted for either QSRs or Fine Dining over FSRs\u00a0in 2020. QSRs have emerged as the big winner throughout the pandemic, so it\u2019s no surprise to see them with strong gift card numbers. The Fine Dining category is interesting, because it suggests that people still crave a dining experience, either through high-quality food or in the hope that they can dine-in soon,\u201d said Lee Barnes, head of Paytronix Data Insights.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Even as sales were lower this year, traditional sales patterns continued to hold.
