ORLANDO, Fla., Dec. 22, 2020 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Tech-driven vertical farming company Kalera<\/u><\/a> (Euronext Growth Oslo ticker KAL, Bloomberg: KSLLF), today announced it will open a facility in Honolulu, Hawaii in 2021. Kalera\u2019s Hawaiian location will be the Company\u2019s eighth facility announced, making it one of the fastest growing vertical farming companies in the United States. It will also be the largest vertical farming operation in the state, providing approximately 60 jobs to the local community upon opening.<\/p>\n

The news of this facility comes on the heels of a string of exciting updates from Kalera, including the announcement of upcoming facilities in Atlanta<\/u><\/a>, Houston<\/u><\/a>, Denver<\/u><\/a>, Seattle<\/u><\/a> and Columbus<\/u><\/a>; the addition of two new members<\/u><\/a> to the Board of Directors, including Red Lobster CEO, Kim Lopdrup; and the completion of\u00a0over $150 million in fundraising<\/u><\/a> this year.<\/p>\n

With millions of heads of lettuce to be grown per year, Kalera\u2019s Honolulu facility will provide a rare and much needed local source of fresh, non-GMO, clean, living lettuces and microgreens to retailers, restaurants and other customers. 90% of Hawaii\u2019s greens are currently grown on the mainland United States and shipped into the state \u2013 an expensive 2,500 mile journey that can take over 10 days and require many touchpoints and opportunities for contamination. Kalera\u2019s location within city limits will shorten travel time from days and weeks to hours, preserving nutrients, freshness and flavor.<\/p>\n

Kalera\u2019s hydroponic systems allow their lettuce to grow while consuming 95% less water than field farmed lettuces and while eliminating the need for chemical pesticide or fertilizer use. Paired with shorter shipping times, Kalera\u2019s operations are more ecofriendly than traditional farming. Additionally, Kalera\u2019s efficient growing methods produce yields that are 300-400 times that of traditional farming, allowing the company to maintain conventional pricing in supermarkets.<\/p>\n
