Revenues were more than $200 million above the company\u2019s guided range of $11.15 billion to $11.55 billion. The foreign-exchange impact for the quarter was approximately positive 1.5%, consistent with the assumption provided in the company\u2019s fourth-quarter earnings release.\n<\/p>\n \nGAAP diluted EPS for the quarter were $2.32, an 11% increase from $2.09 for the first quarter last year, including pre-tax gains on an investment of $120 million, or $0.15 per share, and $60 million, or $0.08 per share, respectively. Excluding these gains, adjusted EPS for the first quarter of fiscal 2021 were $2.17, an 8% increase from $2.01 for the first quarter last year. The $0.16 increase in EPS on an adjusted basis reflects:\n<\/p>\n \nGross margin (gross profit as a percentage of revenues) for the quarter was 33.1%, compared with 32.1% for the first quarter last year. Selling, general and administrative (SG&A) expenses for the quarter were $2.01 billion, or 17.1% of revenues, compared with $1.88 billion, or 16.6% of revenues, for the first quarter last year.\n<\/p>\n \nOperating income for the quarter increased 7%, to $1.89 billion, or 16.1% of revenues, compared with $1.77 billion, or 15.6% of revenues, for the first quarter of fiscal 2020.\n<\/p>\n \nThe company\u2019s effective tax rate for the quarter was 23.4%, compared with 23.6% for the first quarter last year. Excluding the investment gains and the related tax expense of $23 million and $10 million, respectively, the effective tax rate for the first quarter of fiscal 2021 was 23.7%, compared with 23.9% for the first quarter last year.\n<\/p>\n \nNet income for the quarter was $1.52 billion, compared with $1.38 billion for the first quarter last year.
