Between March 14, when the Canadian government announced the state of emergency, and November 30, the total number of proxy contests launched was 39, an increase of 44% over the same period last year and in line with 2018 levels.\n<\/p>\n<p><b>Activism is for Everyone: <\/b>Activist funds are not the only force behind proxy fights in Canada anymore, particularly in today\u2019s environment. Individual shareholders and groups of smaller investors have begun to display newfound activism levels. While these shareholders do not possess the same resources as traditional activist investors, due to the current climate and the tools available, individuals have more mechanisms \u2013 such as digital and video conferencing tools, which offer broad, low-cost methods to engage with other shareholders and coordinate attacks \u2013 at their disposal.\n<\/p>\n<p><b>Targets Abound:<\/b> Recovery is a difficult road to navigate, and small and nano-cap companies, or those heavily impacted by the pandemic, such as travel and hospitality, will not be on the only targets. Regardless of industry, companies that are unable to pivot their business models to address the new realities of COVID-19 \u2013 such as digitizing consumer products and services, streamlining operations, and implementing robust business continuity plans \u2013 will become prime targets of activism.\n<\/p>\n<p><b>Activists Have to be Activists: <\/b>With the pandemic expected to last until at least the end of 2021, waiting for COVID-19 to subside before restarting activism is unrealistic. We already see activism on the rise, following an initial period of dormancy in the wake of COVID-19.
