The large sculpture of a seated female figure entwined in bronze coils\u00a0will become part of the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth\u2019s permanent collection. The new work will be on view in one of the Modern\u2019s first-floor pavilion galleries beginning Saturday, December 19.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Mutu was born and raised in Nairobi, Kenya, and now divides her time between there and Brooklyn. She created <i>The Seated III<\/i> as part of a four-sculpture commission for the fa\u00e7ade of New York City\u2019s Metropolitan Museum of Art for the exhibition <i>The NewOnes, will free Us<\/i>. The work and its mirror image, <i>The Seated I<\/i>, occupied niches facing Fifth Avenue, along with another mirrored pair, <i>The Seated II<\/i> and <i>The Seated IV<\/i>. Each figure is cast in an edition of three. Two of the sculptures have entered the Met\u2019s permanent collection, and <i>The Seated III<\/i> will soon take up her vigil overlooking the Modern\u2019s reflecting pond.<\/p>\n<p>Price comments, \u201cWangechi Mutu\u2019s recent group of four bronze female figures is exciting and powerful, and we are honored to add one of them to our permanent collection.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMutu\u2019s <i>The Seated III<\/i> will change the face of the Modern. Like a divine presence presiding over the pond, this bronze goddess will shine on all who enter the museum, exuding a calm strength,\u201d remarks Senior Curator Andrea Karnes.<\/p>\n<p>The artist\u2019s\u00a0interest in caryatids is centered around the carved bodies of strong women that\u00a0are incorporated into many traditions of classical African sculpture.\u00a0They include the royal staffs of the\u00a0Kingdom of\u00a0Luba\u00a0from\u00a0Central Africa, the holy stools of the Yoruba kings, the\u00a0figures of mothers in\u00a0Makonde\u00a0ritual stools, and many others.\u00a0The caryatids of African sculpture predate the classical Greek and Roman architectural figures, which are essentially anthropomorphic columns. These particular African caryatids represent the divine\u00a0female in her role as a central pillar and are symbolic of her\u00a0responsibility in society. It is these singular caryatids\u00a0that inspired <i>The New Ones<\/i>, those<i>\u00a0<\/i>relieved\u00a0from their role of eternal\u00a0weight-bearers.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Mutu\u00a0rewrites the role of the caryatid. <i>The Seated III<\/i>\u00a0bears only her own weight and is unattached to the building or any structure around her. She is serene and regal, and her calm extends to her fingers and her expression, which is that of a woman in her rightful place. Her garment is fashioned from sinewy coils that envelop and protect her body, draping around her suggestively like heavy embellishment. Her stretched head refers to the tradition of binding craniums in many ancient high-status individuals, like wealthy women of the\u00a0Mangbetu, royalty from ancient\u00a0Kemet,\u00a0and even rulers of the Aztec and Mayan empires.\u00a0Those painful and heavy enhancements and alterations were symbols of great status.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p \/>\n<p>Wangechi Mutu,\u00a0<i>The Seated III<\/i>, 2019.
