Small Business Innovation Research Program Provides Seed Funding for R&D<\/h2>\n

\n YONKERS, N.Y.<\/span>, Dec. 7, 2020<\/span> \/PRNewswire\/ — alpha-En Corporation\u00a0has been awarded\u00a0a National Science Foundation (NSF) Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR)\u00a0grant\u00a0for\u00a0$255,737\u00a0to conduct research and development (R&D) work to\u00a0advance a low-cost lithium metal thin film coating technology to produce anodes to advance the next generation batteries in commercial quantities.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“NSF is proud to support the technology of the future by thinking beyond incremental developments and funding the most creative, impactful ideas across all markets and areas of science and engineering,” said Andrea Belz<\/span>, Division Director of the Division of Industrial Innovation and Partnerships at NSF. “With the support of our research funds, any deep technology startup or small business can guide basic science into meaningful solutions that address tremendous needs.” <\/p>\n

Vedasri Vedharathinam, the projects Principal Investigator remarked, “The implementation of alpha-En’s flow assisted electrodeposition technology is an innovative solution for high purity lithium metal thin film anodes (< 30 micron) on any conductive substrate with minimal energy consumption and no environmental impact. The Phase I grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) validates our approach as we work to advance our research and commercialize our breakthrough technology.”<\/p>\n

Once a small business is awarded a Phase I SBIR\/STTR grant (up to $256,000<\/span>), it becomes eligible to apply for a Phase II grant (up to $1,000,000<\/span>). Small businesses with Phase II grants are eligible to receive up to $500,000<\/span> in additional matching funds with qualifying third-party investment or sales. <\/p>\n

Startups or entrepreneurs who submit a three-page Project Pitch<\/a> will know within three weeks if they meet the program’s objectives to support innovative technologies that show promise of commercial and\/or societal impact and involve a level of technical risk. Small businesses with innovative science and technology solutions, and commercial potential are encouraged to apply.\u00a0<\/i>All proposals submitted to the NSF SBIR\/STTR program, also known as America’s Seed Fund powered by NSF, undergo a rigorous merit-based review process.
