Once a global top-five auto manufacturer, Canada now doesn\u2019t even crack the top 10.<\/p>\n<p>In short, transportation emissions are up, and the auto manufacturing sector is down.<\/p>\n<p>The good news: our car conundrum also has a solution, one explored in a new Clean Energy Canada report released today. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.globenewswire.com\/Tracker?data=5JvIUMGUJjOPK6nulJfTfR-WTlnAKcrWW2xchme6Ej8-IrPLkf18sUIBJuhmHOouEbnjbuYc72TXfTPQBAr6RAGnfTBAXU3v8GPVs1DMCuu76jBCxe3F_VT3ZYJQuVue\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"><em><u>Taking the Whee<\/u><\/em><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.globenewswire.com\/Tracker?data=Xhzpen_h5X7ERLDi7sp1Ki6S94RhxsIYM4aEAbZ6Nw2jxq9O9R7ylEPBQ0XGP_Kne7yI0_fmCwBsJEcKiPJ4CJR6hBSH_lVZHtVMJ-T7IcQ=\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"><em><u>l<\/u><\/em><\/a> finds that, with a deliberate approach for drivers and industry, zero-emission vehicles can both cut pollution and set our auto sector up to compete in the global economy.<\/p>\n<p>Already, most Canadians lean toward an electric car for their next vehicle purchase, but most car dealerships in the country don\u2019t have a single EV available to test drive or purchase.<\/p>\n<p>And while Fiat Chrysler and Ford Motor laid out plans this fall to build EVs in Ontario, prior to these announcements, an analysis of 29 global automakers had identified US$300 billion flowing into EV development with not a single dollar destined for Canada.<\/p>\n<p>Canada has the workforce and geographic strengths to be an EV leader but is lacking a roadmap to get us there. An industrial strategy and a package of policies to drive long-term investment in and the adoption of zero-emission vehicles could reposition Canada in the global EV race, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.globenewswire.com\/Tracker?data=ozQA0L9tMIaKvbZH7ZL9GT5beQrc4iiV-t-XK5H7zxSfGZdBA_Rli8fdKC3QfYwTOC2lEMnsIRajt_fnvmDOujtjimszcUb-tnKmnq4W_XSpf8gu5cratMpr-5uBR840\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"><u>new report<\/u><\/a> concludes.<\/p>\n<p>The federal government last month made its national pollution targets legally binding. But with transportation responsible for a quarter of these emissions, it will be hard to meet targets without addressing Canada\u2019s car conundrum. A comprehensive approach could be a win-win for our economy and our climate.<\/p>\n<p>\n        <strong>KEY FACTS<\/strong>\n      <\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>Canada is the 12th-largest vehicle producer in the world but <a href=\"https:\/\/theicct.org\/sites\/default\/files\/publications\/Canada-Power-Play-ZEV-04012020.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"><u>significantly trails<\/u><\/a> other countries on electric vehicles. Canada accounts for 2.2% of light-duty vehicles made globally but only 0.4% for EVs.<\/li>\n<li>Replacing gas vehicles with electric ones in B.C., Alberta, and Ontario today would reduce emissions between 34% and 98% (factoring in both the pollution from driving a gas car and pollution from the electricity grid that charges the EV), and between 46% and 87% by 2050, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S1361920917307113\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"><u>according to the Sustainable Transportation Action Research Team<\/u><\/a> at Simon Fraser University.<\/li>\n<li>Canada has light-duty zero-emission vehicle <a href=\"https:\/\/cleanenergycanada.us2.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=14af3f96b3d5df9564694d168&amp;id=2b94e70f48&amp;e=10ec4b50a9\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"><u>sales targets of 10% by 2025, 30% by 2030, and 100% by 2040\u2014but existing policy is <\/u><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/cleanenergycanada.us2.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=14af3f96b3d5df9564694d168&amp;id=2b94e70f48&amp;e=10ec4b50a9\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"><u>not sufficient to meet these targets<\/u><\/a><\/li>\n<li>More <a href=\"https:\/\/cleanenergycanada.us2.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=14af3f96b3d5df9564694d168&amp;id=f6e92f5e0a&amp;e=10ec4b50a9\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"><u>than a dozen countries<\/u><\/a> around the world have announced plans to phase out the sale of new fossil-fuel-powered cars by 2050 or earlier, as have <a href=\"https:\/\/cleanenergycanada.org\/new-b-c-electric-car-law-helps-consumers-access-the-vehicles-and-the-future-they-want\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"><u>B.C.<\/u><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/cleanenergycanada.org\/quebecs-gas-car-ban-spotlights-need-for-canada-wide-approach\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"><u>Quebec<\/u><\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>In September, California\u2019s governor signed an <a href=\"https:\/\/cleanenergycanada.us2.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=14af3f96b3d5df9564694d168&amp;id=6cdde0586d&amp;e=10ec4b50a9\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"><u>executive<\/u><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/cleanenergycanada.us2.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=14af3f96b3d5df9564694d168&amp;id=6cdde0586d&amp;e=10ec4b50a9\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"><u> order<\/u><\/a> requiring all new passenger cars and light-duty trucks sold in California to be zero-emission by 2035.
