MONTREAL, Dec. 03, 2020 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Deep into the second wave of COVID-19, Rogers Communications today announced it is providing hundreds of free phones, voice and data plans to women\u2019s shelters across Quebec to enable connectivity for women experiencing violence and abuse. A recent report<\/u><\/a> shows that since the start of the pandemic, the severity of violence against women seeking shelters has doubled, causing an urgent need to support women and children who may be facing the reality of being at home with an abusive family member.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor Quebec women and children escaping abuse, phones and connectivity provide an essential digital lifeline that allows them to access emergency resources safely,\u201d said Edith Cloutier, President of Quebec, Rogers Communications. \u201cWhen home is no longer a safe place to be, we\u2019re proud to help enable these critical connections for women and children so they can access critical resources from the organizations that support them.\u201d<\/p>\n

Expanding on a previous announcement<\/a> with Quebec women\u2019s shelters like L\u2019Arr\u00eat-Source<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Le Cha\u00eenon<\/a>\u00a0in Montreal last spring, Rogers is providing hundreds of additional phones along with six months of free voice and data plans to women\u2019s shelters across the province. The company is extending all services<\/a> to the end of June 2021 to bridge connectivity needs as women are experiencing increased isolation during the second COVID-19 wave, with restrictions across Quebec.<\/p>\n

Quebec women\u2019s shelters receiving phones and plans include L’Inter Elles in Langelier, Maison Simonne Monet-Chartrand<\/u><\/a> in Chambly, La Maison d’h\u00e9bergement L’\u00c9gide in La Prairie, Le Havre des Femmes<\/u><\/a> in L\u2019Islet, La maison d\u2019Athena<\/u><\/a> in Montr\u00e9al, Maison secours aux femmes<\/u><\/a> in Montr\u00e9al, La Cl\u00e9 sur la Porte<\/u><\/a> in St-Hyacinthe,<\/u>L’Ombre-Elle<\/u><\/a> in Sainte-Agathe-des-Monts, Regroup’elles<\/u><\/a> in Terrebonne, and\u00a0Havre l’\u00c9claircie<\/u><\/a> in St-Georges.<\/p>\n

These services have been extended by another six months to bridge connectivity needs during this second wave of COVID-19. This includes phones and plans to organizations like Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Montreal<\/u><\/a> to allow \u201cLittles\u201d to stay in regular contact with their \u201cBigs\u201d, Pflag Montreal<\/u><\/a> for virtual peer mentoring sessions for LGBTQ2S+ youth and their families, and for virtual youth education programs offered by YMCA of Quebec<\/u><\/a> and the Fondation pour les \u00e9l\u00e8ves de la Commission scolaire de la r\u00e9gion de Sherbrooke<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n
