Boston, Nov. 19, 2020 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Newark Public Schools (NPS) has approved expanding implementation of Lexia Learning\u2019s\u00a0Lexia\u00ae Core5\u00ae Reading<\/a>\u00a0(Core5) and\u00a0Lexia\u00ae PowerUp Literacy\u00ae<\/a>\u00a0(PowerUp) throughout its K-5 and K-8 schools. This decision comes after the district\u2019s trial subscription successfully\u00a0helped teachers both within their classrooms\u00a0before the\u00a0pandemic and\u00a0with remote learning\u00a0that began in\u00a0March. In all, the strong ESSA rated\u00a0literacy solutions\u00a0will now be serving almost 20,000 students in 41 schools. The district has also decided to support their educators through this critical time by ensuring strong, ongoing implementations of Core5 and PowerUp\u00a0via\u00a0yearlong Success Partnerships with Lexia.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe were using Core5 in just six of our elementary schools prior to the pandemic,\u201d said Dr. Mary Ann Reilly, assistant superintendent for Teaching and Learning. \u201cWhen COVID-19 hit and our schools transitioned to remote learning, we were able to quickly expand Core5 to all our elementary schools. The program was flexible enough to enable us to provide continuity of instruction to students remotely, targeting literacy gaps and even accelerating learning. We\u2019ve been impressed with the programs and how helpful Lexia has been with the transition. We\u2019re confident that our students will continue to make gains with good teaching and Lexia.\u201d<\/p>\n

The district\u2019s purchase also includes\u00a0Lexia Academy, the company\u2019s eLearning platform offering on-demand professional learning courses.\u00a0The academy gives the district\u2019s educators access to \u201canytime, anywhere\u201d\u00a0support\u00a0that helps\u00a0them develop\u00a0best practices\u00a0for meaningful instruction when using Lexia products.\u00a0Newark educators have embraced courses on topics like Structured Literacy, remote teaching strategies, and effective reading instruction for students with dyslexia.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe use Lexia Academy to help the teachers understand the \u2018why\u2019 behind our use of the programs,\u201d said Theresa Finkelstein, the vice principal at Franklin School, a pre-K-6 school within the district. \u201cTeachers also really like how user-friendly the educator platform is.
