WATERLOO, Ontario, Nov. 18, 2020 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Vivek Goel,\u00a0a distinguished scholar\u00a0with extensive achievements\u00a0in research, teaching and leadership across both public and private sectors,\u00a0will\u00a0become the seventh president\u00a0and\u00a0vice-chancellor\u00a0of the University of Waterloo.<\/p>\n

Goel, who begins his five-year term on July 1, 2021,\u202fis recognized in Canada and around the world\u00a0as a leading\u00a0public-health researcher,\u00a0health-services evaluation expert, and champion for the use of research evidence in health\u00a0policymaking.<\/p>\n

Goel has held\u00a0several\u00a0senior\u00a0roles\u00a0at the University of Toronto, including Vice-President and Provost and most recently as Vice-President\u00a0of\u00a0Research and Innovation.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0public health physician\u00a0currently serves as a member of the federal government\u2019s COVID-19 Immunity Task\u00a0Force and Scientific Advisor for the CanCOVID Research Network. He was previously the founding president and CEO of Public Health Ontario.<\/p>\n

The appointment\u00a0represents\u00a0the culmination of an almost\u00a0yearlong effort by a 19-member presidential nominating committee comprised of students, staff, faculty and board governors, in consultation with stakeholders across campus and the broader community.<\/p>\n

Goel obtained his medical degree from McGill University. He did his post-graduate medical training in community medicine at the University of\u00a0Toronto, and\u00a0obtained a master\u2019s degree (MSc) in health administration from the University of Toronto and a master\u2019s degree (MS) in biostatistics from Harvard University\u2019s School of Public Health.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Goel\u00a0also\u00a0currently serves\u00a0on the boards of the Vector Institute, TRIUMF\u2014Canada\u2019s particle accelerator\u2014and the Canadian Institute for Health Information.<\/p>\n
