We would expect to see some sort of latent price correction, but it will probably not become visible until after a return to ‘normal’\u00a0trading. This year, the lockdowns took effect before auction houses had time to react, forcing an abrupt halt to transactions\u00a0and then subsequently\u00a0slowing their recovery.<\/p>\n

“The Art Market has its own defense mechanisms<\/i><\/b>“, says\u00a0thierry Ehrmann, President and Founder of Artmarket.com and its Artprice department. “The real price impact of the health crisis will not be fully visible until the auction market\u00a0returns to a normal volume of trade (500,000 lots sold at auctions per year) and, above all, until private sales have successfully established enough new channels to offset\u00a0the absence of major fairs and the closure of so\u00a0many galleries. For the time being, we are pleased to note\u00a0that the <\/b>secondary<\/b>art market is finding the necessary resources in terms of the numbers of lots offered, technical solutions and financial liquidity<\/b>\u00a0to ensure a decent level of activity.<\/i>“<\/p>\n

Artprice calculates its\u00a0Global Art Market Indices<\/b> on the basis of the results obtained at public sales\u00a0exclusively. However, this segment\u00a0of the market appears to have\u00a0adapted more quicky and successfully to lockdown measures: from the beginning of the year to\u00a0the end of October, global art auction turnover contracted by\u00a0only -25% versus FY 2019\u00a0with\u00a0the number of lots sold\u00a0falling only\u00a0-16%. Auction houses have therefore managed to\u00a0continue with the bulk of their operations, which is not the case for lots of\u00a0galleries and art fairs. <\/p>\n

Several auction records have also proved that art market prices have by no means been\u00a0systematically undermined. On\u00a0the contrary, they have remained relatively robust this year. The sale of Giorgio de Chirico’s<\/span> painting Il pomeriggio di Arianna<\/i> (1913) for $15.9 million<\/span> at Sotheby’s in New York<\/span> on 29 October 2020<\/span> illustrates\u00a0a market still keen to acquire masterpieces. The sale of Boticelli’s Young Man Holding<\/span> a Roundel<\/i> has been postponed \u00a0until January. Auction houses may be delaying some sales, but they are\u00a0ensuring\u00a0the continuity of transactions.<\/b>\u00a0<\/p>\n
