Walker Research Chair in Economic Freedom at the Fraser Institute and co-author of this year\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fraserinstitute.org\/economic-freedom\/map?geozone=na&amp;page=map&amp;year=2017&amp;selectedCountry=USA\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"><strong><em>Economic Freedom of North America<\/em><\/strong><\/a> report, which measures government spending, taxation and labour market restrictions using data from 2018 (the latest year of available comparable data).<\/p>\n<p>Economic freedom\u2014the ability of individuals to make their own economic decisions including what to buy, where to work and whether to start a business\u2014is fundamental to prosperity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHigher levels of economic freedom lead to more opportunity, more prosperity, greater economic growth, more investment and jobs,\u201d McMahon said.<\/p>\n<p>In this year\u2019s report, Alberta remained the highest-ranked province (9<sup>th<\/sup> overall) followed by British Columbia (27<sup>th<\/sup>), Ontario (45<sup>th<\/sup>), Saskatchewan (47<sup>th<\/sup>), Manitoba (52<sup>nd<\/sup>) and Quebec (55<sup>th<\/sup>).<\/p>\n<p>Crucially, from 2015 to 2018 (again, the latest year of available comparable data), the United States and Canada have diverged in their levels of economic freedom.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn recent years, Canadian provinces have fallen in the North American economic freedom ranking and that has real consequences for the economic prospects of Canadians and their families,\u201d McMahon said.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fraserinstitute.org\/economic-freedom\/map?geozone=na&amp;page=map&amp;year=2017&amp;selectedCountry=USA\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"><strong><em>Economic Freedom of North America<\/em><\/strong><\/a> report is an offshoot of the Fraser Institute\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fraserinstitute.org\/economic-freedom\/map?geozone=world&amp;page=map&amp;year=2018\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"><strong><em>Economic Freedom of the World<\/em><\/strong><\/a> index, the result of more than a quarter century of work by more than 60 scholars including three Nobel laureates.<\/p>\n<p>Detailed tables for each country and subnational jurisdiction can be found at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fraserinstitute.org\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">www.fraserinstitute.org<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\n        <strong>MEDIA CONTACT<\/strong>: <br \/>Fred McMahon<br \/>Dr. Michael A.
