This compared with revenues of approximately <span class=\"xn-money\">$0.9 million<\/span> in the same period in 2019, which was comprised of <span class=\"xn-money\">$0.2 million<\/span> in product sales and <span class=\"xn-money\">$0.8 million<\/span> related to the NIDA grant. Product revenue during the three month period ended <span class=\"xn-chron\">September 30, 2020<\/span> declined from the comparable periods in 2019 due to a substantial decrease in unit sales volumes; increased utilization of patient assistance programs; and the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and the related shelter-in-place restrictions and clinic closures.\u00a0 <\/p>\n<p>Total operating expenses for the third quarter of 2020 were approximately <span class=\"xn-money\">$5<\/span>.8\u00a0million, compared with approximately <span class=\"xn-money\">$4.8 million<\/span> from the same quarter in 2019, and consisted primarily of research and development (&#8220;R&amp;D&#8221;) and selling, general and administrative (&#8220;SG&amp;A&#8221;) expenses and costs of goods sold, inclusive of distribution expenses. R&amp;D expenses for the quarter ended <span class=\"xn-chron\">September 30, 2020<\/span> were approximately <span class=\"xn-money\">$1<\/span>.6\u00a0million, consistent with the same three month period in 2019. SG&amp;A expenses for the 2020 third quarter were approximately <span class=\"xn-money\">$3<\/span>.5\u00a0million, compared with approximately <span class=\"xn-money\">$3.0 million<\/span> in the same quarter a year ago. Costs of goods sold for the third quarter of 2020 were approximately <span class=\"xn-money\">$0.7 million<\/span>, compared with approximately <span class=\"xn-money\">$0.2 million<\/span> the 2019 third quarter.<\/p>\n<p>Net other expense, consisting primarily of interest expense, was approximately <span class=\"xn-money\">$0<\/span>.3\u00a0million in the third quarter of 2020, compared with net other income of approximately <span class=\"xn-money\">$1.1 million<\/span> in the third quarter of 2019.
