Canada was the top source at 32%, followed by Kazakhstan at 28% and Australia at 15%. At the same time, regulators are clearing the way for new reactors and utilities are signing long-term deals to add nuclear output, which puts more attention on where the fuel for that growth will come from. Companies mentioned in today’s commentary include: Eagle Nuclear Energy Corp. (NASDAQ: NUCL), GE Vernova Inc. (NYSE: GEV), Constellation Energy Corporation (Nasdaq: CEG), Ur-Energy Inc. Before loading fuel and starting operations, TVA will need a separate operating license from the NRC. Federal policy points in the same direction: a May 2025 executive order set a policy goal of expanding American nuclear energy capacity from approximately 100 GW in 2024 to 400 GW by 2050.

The reactor TVA plans to build is the BWRX-300 from GE Vernova Hitachi Nuclear Energy, the nuclear alliance of GE Vernova Inc. It also noted that in September 2026, a developer submitted the first part of its construction permit application to the NRC for a BWRX-300 planned for a gas-plus-nuclear project in Texas, and that construction of the first BWRX-300 is underway at Ontario Power Generation’s Darlington New Nuclear Project site in Canada.

“This is a milestone for TVA and GE Vernova Hitachi Nuclear Energy, and an important moment for new nuclear in the United States,” said Eric Gray, CEO of GE Vernova Power Segment.

Existing plants are being asked for more, too. At the end of 2025, unfilled uranium market requirements for U.S. reactor owners and operators for 2025 through 2035 totaled 186 million pounds U3O8 equivalent, the agency reported. U.S. uranium production facilities produced about 2.1 million pounds of U3O8 concentrate in 2025, a significant increase from the 657,000 pounds produced in 2024, and second-quarter 2026 production totaled 1,087,504 pounds from six facilities, four in Wyoming, one in Texas and one in Utah.

Enrichment adds a second pressure point. In 2025, the U.S.-origin share of enrichment services (measured in separative work units, or SWU) bought by U.S. reactor operators was 23%, and foreign-origin SWU included 26% from Russia, according to the EIA. Under the Prohibiting Russian Uranium Imports Act, signed in May 2024, any waiver allowing imports of Russian low-enriched uranium shall terminate not later than January 1, 2028.

Washington is also looking upstream. In an August 10 Federal Register notice, the Department of Energy set out a Defense Production Act plan of action under which a Mining & Milling Subcommittee will focus on how to accelerate and expand the production of U.S.-origin, unobligated natural uranium concentrate (U3O8) to fulfill critical national security requirements and to support affordable civil nuclear fuel supply.

        New Production in Wyoming

Wyoming is where much of today’s domestic output is coming from. Ur-Energy Inc.
